FYI, you DID read it correctly! Your reading is fine. You just read past some words you didn't fully understand. When a person goes past a word he/she does not understand, he/she will "go blank" from then on and comprehend little. This is where the confusion comes from. Locate the word that was not understood, look it up and amazingly, what was blank is now clear. Unfortunately, this is all to common in technical materials, but little by little, clearing up technical terms results in an understanding that can then be applied. After all, what good is it to "learn" something and not be able to use (apply) it!
