Recently we get mail from all types of merchants:
    Walmart
    K-Mart
    Cheap Viagra
    etc
    etc

We have Anti Virus, Spybot, Ad-Aware and all that.
These say the computer is clean.

We use C-Cleaner to wipe cookies and files and the history files are set
    to 0 days.

    Yet we get this junk.

Any suggestions on how we can prevent this ?

    Dear jbarker

    I understand you very much.

About 2 hours ago I checked my mail using MailWasher. I cleaned out at least a dozen items. I just checked again and their were more than before. All but one of them left also.

:) And some of the stuff would sure not be too good for and Old Man llike me to try :)

I use MailWasher as it checks to see what is in the box but does not downloaded it unless I tell it to. I just check through and mark for deletion anything that I do not want downloaded. Then when I sleect PROCESS MAIL all things check are deleted right off of the server. The rest are downloaded by Eudora which starts on auto.

I just got informed that my lunch is ready. So will checl back later.

    Hi jbarker,

I presume you have your preview pane disabled, since you have been a member here for a few years?

    Setup of review pane ?

We have machine #1 and machine #2.

#1 has Windows XP Pro SP 2 with OE 6.00.2900.2180
We use this machine for the Internet.

#2 has Windows Millennium Edition with OE 6.00.2600.000
(Why? - Because we got lots of software that will not
run using XP ! And updates - if available - are not free.)

    *********************************************************

    You suggest:

"In OE - Tools > View > Preview Pane"

    *********************************************************

Ok, we open Outlook Express on machine #1.
    Go to the "Inbox ".
    Several mails are showing.

However we are in "full screen" mode.

(We use machine #2 and we do see the so called "review pane ".
The screen is split. When we high light a mail the contents show
in the lower half. To have that split screen does let one see the contents without "opening" the mail. A good security feature.)

    *********************************************************

Now to set it up on machine #1

    We are in OE.
    We select Tools.

There is no "View" item in the dropdown menu box (on either machine).

So far, we only find information about "preview pane" in the help
files. No detail instructions on how to enable a split screen.

    *********************************************************

Could not do as you suggested because no "view" is available under Tools.

So, what are the setup steps for enableing a "review panel "
or disabeling a review panel ?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now, we'll end it here - seems there is no way to prevent junk mailings from HallMart,Pears and X-Mart etc. !Just review and delete it. That's surgical, not preventive action.

    Thanks

jbarker--In OE6, it is OE View|Layout|uncheck "Show Preview Pane ".
However, recognize this is just one way to protect yourself from the effects of malicious email. It will not stop the malicious email, also known as spam. For that you must take the other steps suggested.

Not so. If you view the email using the preview pane it's the same as opening it. That's why it's good practice to not use it. You can sort through the emails and click on and delete the ones you don't want without having them open all the time.
