Got this mgs 2 times during bootup (just before icons were to appear).
Searches shows many possible reasons but no real fix to it or really not even a good
    explanation for it.

A run of chkdsk /r /s and sfc /scannow seems to have fixed it (don't get it
anymore) but really curious about the lack of explanation, and cause/fix.
I figure its just a matter of time before I'll see it again.

Anyone have any factual knowledge of this error message? What it means,
    fixes?

    thanks,

i found something that seems to point to a registry problem with atapi. If it
happens again (unless better info is found) I'll try this.

But then again - Unknown generally mean the system isn't exactly sure..

Did you look in task manager and maybe find a little something?

    Hi Steve,

Not really, since it seems to be fixed haven't had it again) with either chkdsk or
    scannow.

HD, partitions, etc is working good. Just to be safe tho i cloned my "C" drive
    and made another acronis backup.

    thanks

Ummm, there is no /s switch with chkdsk. Please clarify. Note is you meant /f, you don't need to include that with /r because /r already includes the functions of /f plus more. If you enter chkdsk /? you will see all the switch options.

Note explorer.exe is the primary core component of Windows itself so I would not expect this to be fixed by chkdsk. So I suspect system file checker (sfc) replaced a file that became corrupt some how.

Do you remember if Windows shut down properly before the boot with the errors?

    Bill,

I stand corrected on the chkdsk options (fingers to fast).

Agree it was probably the scannow that fixed whatever was wrong. Been a
couple days and no occurance of problem.

Previous shutdown were as normal, no problems.

I'll mark this as solved (until it shows again, if ever.

    thanks for feedback,
