    Hewee,

The chance that 4.79 will take care of the hanging problem is, IMO, somewhere between zilch and nill. My 4.70 works just fine in my office computer.

I think the "Pop-up saver" program I had in my home computer (before I removed it) somehow corrupted it. It was causing an error message to pop up, you will recall. The error message no longer appears, but the hanging continues.

Anyway, I need to update anyhow, so I'm looking forward to 4.79; and now that I know how to avoid the hanging, all is fine.

    abay,

    I share your pessimism.

I would give you one more suggestion. Even though you created a new profile, and that didn't seem to help, When you do the "Clean Install" process, I would again, create a new profile. You're going to get rid of all remnants of Netscape and get a clean install. Follow the complete process of the Clean install:
If you are upgrading because you are having problems with your current version of Netscape Communicator, follow these additional steps:

    abay,

Glad you want the upgrade because if it does not fix the trouble you will not need to feel so bad.

But I would do as Ramona said and do a clean install.

Plus have you ever made a new DUN?
I would try doing that also. Check with your ISP to get all the right setting.

The "Pop-up saver" program may of changed something there or in Netscape so if you make a new DUN and do a Clean Install of Netscape I would think that bug would go away.

    Hewee,

I've never heard of a DUN. Sounds like some kind of housekeeping thing. Is it reasonably simple? If it requires significant expertise to perform, maybe I shouldn't try.

Actually, the "hanging" thing no longer bothers me, since I've learned how to work around it. On the other hand, this has become something of a challenge, so if a DUN might take care of it, I might want to give it a try.

    abay,

    DUN is your Dial-Up Networking.

What you click on to dial.:)

If your setup is like mine all you need to do is make a new one and add your number you dial to for your ISP and the password.

You can make a new one and keep the old one you have now. Just need to give it another name.

Your ISP should have a page that tells you the setting too but you may not need it at all.

Your need the setting for your email incoming and outgoing email but you can copy what you have now down.

Then after a new clean install of Netscape and a new DUN I would think the trouble would go away.

You can do the DUN now to see what happens.

    Ramona & Hewee,

Thought I should let you know what happened. Matters just kept getting worse, until finally I was unable to get online altogether -- either through Netscape or I.E. or Outlook Express or my Winfax or whatever. So, I finally bit the bullet and used my manufacturer's Rescue disk, and thus wiped my harddisk clean. However, I had a full backup on a second harddisk, so I have now reconstructed everything, I'm fully online, no hanging at all, and all's well.

It was a lot of work (since I've never done that before), but the problem is solved.

I thank you both for your multiple attempts to help me.

    abay (MRBEE),

    So the nightmare is over.
To bad you had to do what you did but sometimes that is the best way to go.

Glad you got all working great now and next time maybe we can help you out and have it work.:D

There is a setting in control panel\internet options\connections
    tab.
there is a button in the connections tab called ( lan settings ).

If the setting ( AUTOMATICALLY DETECT SETTINGS ) is selected
    by a check mark.
It sometimes causes netscape not to load the page.
but if you restart netscape then it will load properly.
even if the home page loads sometimes it will mess up loading other links.
If the option is checked remove the check mark.
then hit ok then apply the new setting.

I've had problems in the past when this setting was selected.

    Roger,

At this point in time, I'm as happy as a fox guarding the hen house. I have no "hanging" problem now, and my computer is behaving splendidly. Hence, I don't plan to change a thing. Apparently I had a lot of corruption which was cleared up when I formatted my C drive and then reinstalled everything, program by program.

    But thanks anyway.
