    Ramona,

I think we are working on the same one here.
Under another user name over at TSG.

    http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65915

I can't see why the homepage works after shuting down netscape and opening it up and go to the very same homepage.

D*** I used thought of something.

I have it set up so I have to click on my own the dial-up. It does not pop up and want to dial on it's own when I open up netscape.

Maybe that is why??? A bug between the dial-up and netscape that goes away when abay close netscape down.

    Ramona,

On the reappearance of the Iomega programs: Check your startup folder in Windows, and if there are shortcuts for those programs there, remove them.

There were such shortcuts and I removed them. However, the hanging at startup still takes place.

Your hang on startup may be the "Phantom Netscape" bug. I've had it happen on occasion, but certainly not every time I start Netscape. When that happens the next time, before you restart Netscape, do this: Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and if there is an entry for netscape, click "End Task ". Let me know if it's there. If so, then you can pretty well nail your problem down to the Netscape "ghosting ".

I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete, there was an entry for netscape, I clicked "End Task ", I was then back at desktop but still connected, I clicked the Netscape icon, and I was then back in the browser and everything was working fine. So -- the hanging still takes place, but apparently the problem is "ghosting ". So, can anything be done?

I need to update to the latest Netscaqpe 4.7 (I think someone said it was "4.77 "). Would that help?

I have one last thought on this problem. You said that you didn't use a Download Manager, or a Hosts file. However, I would like you to check your Registry for this key:

If you are unfamiliar with regedit, this is how to run the feature:
    Start|Run
    Type regedit

    Click on this key
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\AutomationProtocols]

In the right hand pane of the AutomationProtocols key, tell me what is to the right of:

    http= (what's here?)
    ftp= (what's here?)

    Lemmeno.

    Hi hewee,

No, I have the same setup, as I use multiple browsers. The reasons, I believe, are as explained on this web page: Netscape Hangs - Phantom Process. Only one discrepancy in abay's case though, and that is he has a startup problem also. Vewy Stwange!

I did see the thread on the "other" Forum, but as I was helping here as well, didn't want to scatter information between the two Forums. Thanks tho, for alerting me ! :D

    Hi, Ramona & Hewee,

I feel truly privileged in getting all this help, and I thank you.

Ramona, I checked the location in regedit. However, when I got to "automationProtocols ", there was nothing in the right pane, except a little "ab" in side a retangle (State of Washington, perhaps) and the "(Default)" -- no http= or ft=

I looked at that netscape phantom process site you referred (I, too, had a problem getting there at first -- but about the 3rd time, it came up fine), and the words "There is no known fix" at the bottom struck home. I don't need a temporary workaround, since I am already able to get Netscape working as previously mentioned. It just entails a couple of extra clicks and I can live with that.

So, it seems to me that we've gone just about as far as we can possibly go with this.

Still, if you think of anything else, let me know.

As for disabling JAVAscript, it seems to me that that might just bring on further problems -- but if you think it advisable, I'll do it.

    Thanks again.

    Ramona & Hewee,

This is a postscript. I went ahead and disabled JAVAscript per the "Netscape Hangs-Phantom Process" directions. Still hung at startup. I went ahead and re-enabled it.

Didn't try "right-click|OPEN IN NEW WINDOW ", because I don't know where to find that.

    Hi abay,

You can try updating to Communicator 4.79, and see if that helps. From the Release Notes 4.78/4.79 - What's New:

Ghost processes present after shutdown problem has been greatly reduced.

Note, it doesn't say the bug was fixed, but "greatly reduced ". You're certainly not alone in having this problem.

As to disabling JavaScript, I wouldn't. LOL! Just received notice of your PS. Well, now you know why!

Sorry about the link. I've had problems all day when working on my web pages. I have to think it has to do with ATT's Personal Web Page Publishing.

Didn't try "right-click|OPEN IN NEW WINDOW ", because I don't know where to find that.

When right clicking on a URL/link, the option to "Open in New Window" is there. Or you can use Ctrl+N to go to a new window.

That just about wraps it up, unless you want to try upgrading.

    Cheers!

    Ramona :D

    Ramona,

Since I really want to stay with Netscape, I'll go ahead and upgrade to 4.79.

Whether or not this "ghosting" problem is resolved hardly matters to me anymore. I lose precious little time in getting on.

I'll let you know after it, v. 4.79, gets here.

Still can't understand why uninstall/reinstall didn't take care of it for me, but then I'm not the brightest bulb in the tree.

    Ramona,

This belongs in the "for whatever it's worth" file, but since you have been so patient in trying to resolve my problem, I thought I should pass it on.

    I've observed the following:

    1) when I log on by clicking the Netscape icon in desktop, my server's dial-up connection is triggered, the computer connects, but then the hanging occurs, forcing me to X out of Netscape while remaining connected, and then re-clicking the Netscape icon -- after which I am fully logged on and Netscape is fully operational.

    2) however, when I log on by clicking the server's dialup icon in desktop (instead of Netscape), and after achieving connection, I then click the Netscape icon in desktop, there is no hanging at all.

    3) so, I conclude, the problem/bug lies in the process of how Netscape triggers the server's dialup.

Like I said, that's for whatever it's worth.

That was what I was saying above.

I like it set up this way better for a couple reason. I can open any .html pages when off line with out the dial-up box poping up. So programs have an .html help files. etc etc.
Plus I made my own home page so it does not need to be online to load.

Are you using the 4.79 yet?

    Hewee,

I thought I had come up with an original idea, but I see you were way ahead of me.

No, I just sent off for my CDrom version of 4.79 a couple of days ago, and Netscape indicated they wouldn't be able to mail it for 5 to 7 days, so it will be a while.

    abay,

    Under Preferences|Appearance
Do you have a tick beside:
    "On Startup launch Navigator "

    Also, Start|Settings|Control Panel|Internet Options|Connections "
Do you have a tick beside:
"Dial whenever a network connection is not present "

If your Dial-up is the problem, then that is definitely a Windows problem, and not Netscape.

I have used the "Never dial a connection" which will disable Netscape's autodial
and also used "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"
Neither one caused the problem you're having. An occasional hang, yes, but not every time you dial up. Very strange.

    Ramona,

Under Preferences|Appearance Do you have a tick beside: "On Startup launch Navigator"
I checked this and it was ticked.

Also, Start|Settings|Control Panel|Internet Options|Connections" Do you have a tick beside: "Dial whenever a network connection is not present "

I checked this. I had "Always dial my default connection" ticked. So, I changed it to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present ".

I then logged out and then logged back on. Still had the hanging problem.

BTW, I have the same Netscape 4.7 on my office computer, and have no hanging problem there.

However, like Hewee, I've adjusted. We'll see what happens when I install 4.79 from the CDROM I have ordered.

    Ramona & Hewee,

This thing has been confusing enough without me further muddling it up. This is a postcript to my previous message. I incorrectly told you in that one that "Never dial a connection" had been ticked. That wasn't right. "Always dial my default connection" was the choice that was ticked. Then I changed it to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present ".

However, it doesn't matter which one is ticked: my computer always hangs no matter what.

I corrected the previous message, but in the event you read it before this correction, I wanted to clarify.

    abay,

I sure hope that 4.79 does away with your trouble.
But seeing that no one knows why it is happening ww will see.
