    Good I think.

The path is clearly invalid. Why, I am not sure. But haven gotten this close lets try C:\Documents\my name\locals\Temp\_is1D\QuickTime.msi

    to fool the installer.

    Try #1:

    Start, Run, cmd

    copy C:\Documents and settings \my name\locals\Temp\_is1D\QuickTime.msi C:\documents\my name\locals\_is1D\Quicktime.msi

    Try again.

    Try #2:

    Start, Run, CMD

    del /s /q C:\Documents\my name\locals\Temp\_is1D\QuickTime.msi
    copy C:\Documents and settings \my name\locals\Temp\_is1D\QuickTime.msi c:\quicktime.msi

    del /s /q C:\Documents and settings \my name\locals\Temp\_is1D\QuickTime.msi

Ignore any errors, but report them back.

    Try again.

Because the site fractures long lines, let me tell you what I am trying to do:

In Try #1, if the new installer is looking for a C:\Documents\my name
    path,

I am forcing a copy from:

C:\documents and settings\my name\.......... to recreate the path it apparantly wants.

In Try #2, I am trying to save the file:
    QuickTime.msi

Away from normal path discovery, and removing any references that the new installer might try to discover for older installations of Quicktime. I am just copying the needed file, and deleting any old folder paths that might have referred to the file.

Bill, when I try to do the first copy at the cmd prompt I get a message saying that the system cannot find the path specified.

When I tried another download to clarify the error message I got the same message as before with the exception _is1D changed to _is7C. This is the path exactly as in the message:

    C:\DOCUME~1\MYNAME~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is7C\QuickTime.msi.

    I will try it again?

Your last is a valid path, in 8.3 shortname form.

I assume you are trying a new installation of Quicktime.

Use Windows Explorer and navigate to:

    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\MYNAME~1\LOCALSETTINGS\Temp

    There should be a folder:
    _is7C

And in folder should be a file:
    QuickTime.msi.

If you can find it, double click it to execute the file. Please advise if you can find the file, and execute it.

It is possile that there is an open install file in the Temp folder, perhaps from a previous attempt to install.

This could prevent a new install from completing.

I would boot to safe mode and do some cleanup.

Do some cleanup. Download and install these in normal mode then boot to safe mode to run:

    Best free cleaners:

    DCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/DCleaner_d4790.html

    ATF-Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/

CCleaner get the slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx

    EasyCleaner http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/files/EClea2_0.exe

Dcleaner and ATFClean are purely disk cleaners. CClean also has a registry cleaner (issues), run this also as many times as it takes to come up clean.

EasyClean does it all but stay away from Duplicate file cleaning (especially Windows OS files) unless you are sure of what you are doing.

I have no idea what an open install file means, but for this user case I need those QuickTime.msi images.

If the Windows Installer is having problems finding its unpacked images, we can use at least the Quicktime.msi files to call the Windows Installer directly.

But this becomes impossible if you have a cleaner remove them.

I know what it is because I have had them before.

A file that is held open by the install process that did not complete OR a file that has been set to hidden, system or readonly that new installer cannot overwrite.

Most likely because as we go up in versions the newer install may still use the same file names.

This IS Quicktime not an esoteric behemoth barely known program.

This is my last post here: uninstall all quicktime again.

Then search out all Quicktime files on the disk and delete, then boot to safe mode run the regseeker process along with the others cleanups as already documented here.

Then reboot and install the newest version.

Any advice on the safest way to search out all QuickTime files and delete them. I think that is how I got into this mess in the first place. Thanks!

Allright I will give the steps here again but they are covered in earlier posts.

    1. In full mode uninstall thru Add/Remove programs Quicktime.

    2. In full mode download and install

    Best free cleaners:

    DCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/DCleaner_d4790.html

    ATF-Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/

CCleaner get the slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx

    EasyCleaner http://personal.inet.fi/business/ton...s/EClea2_0.exe

Dcleaner and ATFClean are purely disk cleaners. CClean also has a registry cleaner (issues), run this also as many times as it takes to come up clean.

EasyClean does it all but stay away from Duplicate file cleaning (especially Windows OS files) unless you are sure of what you are doing.

Hopefully dial-a-fix corrected the permissions so you can actually do this now!

    2.Boot to SAFE MODE.

    In SAFE MODE

    RegSeeker

    Click on Find in Registry

    Check "Find files "

    Search for quickti*.*

Search again with FILES "unchecked" for quicktime. Not quickti*.* here!

If all files are named quicktime or something click select all. They will all be high lighted yellow. Hit the DEL key to delete them.

A find in RegSeeker or Windows XP search that looks like this is OK to delete.

    C:\windows\temp\quicktime.aab
    or
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime

Deleting these only get the file named quicktime?? at the end and not the whole path like say

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\

    The steps

    Safe mode then regseeker
    search registry
    first do FILES quickti*.*
    then
uncheck files and search for quicktime (do not use the *.* in a registry search).

Then still in regseeker come out of search registy and click on clean registy. This does a full general registry clean. Select all delete all.

All we are doing here is deleteing all references to Quicktime on the disk. Then removeing them from the registry.

Now still in safe mode run the cleaners you installed.

    dcleaner
    atfcleaner
    ccleaner
    EasyCleaner only Unnessesary and registry.

Boot back to full mode and try the latest Quicktime install again.

    One other thing Snowbird.

In reviewing the entire thead it looked like when you went to install Ver 7 of quicktime that you ran it from the WWW. Not sure.

If you did then don't do that this time. Save the install file to the HD and run it from there.

In both cases the error message would be different than shown in this case. In your first case the lock would expire when the installer exited. In the second, no lock is involved. The files are not open, and the error message the user receives does not claim an issue with an open file.

The problem here is not so much what is here but what is not.

Assuming you had installed version 7.4 of Quicktime:

. Open Windows Explorer and naviage to:

    C:\WINDOWS\Installer\

    Do you see a folder named {929408E6-D265-4174-805F-81D1D914E2A4}

Do you see a file named: a489bd3.msi ?

The odd looking folder I want to know if you have is the CLSID for QuickTime 7.4, it is a unique way of identifying the application.

Last thing I need to know. Start, Run, regedit.
Click to highlight My Computer at the very top.
Click Edit, Find, and enter: {929408E6-D265

The first entry returned should show on the left: 6E804929562D471408F5181D9D412E4A

And some entries on the right including the Product name of QuickTime.

Please advise me if this is true.

    Mike and Bill,

I understand and have read the previous posts regarding disk and registry cleaning but thank you for consolidating in one place. However I took this message from Bill to mean that I should not be deleting all QuickTime files right now. I was asking (though perhaps not clearly) if there is something I should be deleting at this point and if so, what would be the safest way to do it. Am I understanding correctly?

Bill, I will look for those files and get back to you.

    Thanks.

I did not want to lose the QuickTime.msi file, but it appears you did not get that far during the installation for it to be created before the installer cancelled.

The scripting error you were getting is just bad scripting in this case; a later part of the script did not check to see that the earlier step of creating a directory folder and populating it with QuickTime.msi had cancelled the operation.

Many (not all) Windows Installer based version checking is done against the CLSID of the program. Further checks then look to the folder \WINDOWS\Installer to see if the core .msi for the program is found, and if the CLSID folder is found.

A final check is possible for a previous CLSID instance of the Installer for the program itself. This is not identical to the CLSID of the program instance.

We cannot depend on Windows Installer based installations on the program name. In many cases the entries are multiple, and often bear no resemblence to the actual program; a489bd3.msi for example is the QuickTime 7.4 installer core, and no search on QT* Quick* or variants would find the file.

    Nor can you trust a registry to search to return all instances of the installation based on variations of the Program Name. In this instance you cannot, because the installation stub in the registry references only the program CLSID {929408E6-D265-4174-805F-81D1D914E2A4}

    Hello Sunbird

I want to apologize to you.

It seems Bill and I got into a pi?sing contest at your expense.

You came here for help. You came to the best place on the WWW as far as I am concerned. So hang in there.

The best and smartest and most experienced around, are members here.

Bill is very knowledgeable. All of his advice has been very good.

But Bill and I go about things in different ways.

I never meant for you to do the things I posted over Bill's. If you thought that then it is just the way it came across. This is for anyone that has input to enter in.

If you look at some of the other threads you may find 10 or more posters. Where here we only had 3 here.

    So it can become confusing.

As I said Bill and I look at things somewhat differently.

I believe in Computer Hygiene first.

That is like a doctor, clean it up first.

Get all that is supposed to work working. Then go after the problem.

Get things, running programs out of the way. Hence my directions to run most my posts in safe mode where there is no Virus scanner (in most cases) no firewall no internet etc.

So hopefully Bill will get you going.

If not then reread the thread and do my posts.

This is "for sure" my last post on this.

    Good luck!

    Mike

OK Mike. Thanks for all of your help. I will run the cleaner programs and hopefully get this issue resolved one way or another!

Bill, I will be out of town for a couple of days, but will try to sort out the files when I get back. I'll be back in touch then. Thank you for your help and advice.

    Bill

Hello again. I thought I might give this one more try. Bill, I tried to find the files you asked about and I found that I do not have the folder C:\Windows\Installer. I searched around for the file and did not find it anywhere else either. I ran regedit to find the file as you suggested and it returned nothing.

I ran some of the cleaners that Mike suggested however I was unable to download EasyCleaner (the link sent me to a foreign language site). When I went to try to find the files in regseeker, it came up with lots of references to QuickTime but I was still unable to delete them.

What would be my option as far as saving the information I need and then completely reloading my operating system? I've never tried such a thing, but I'm looking for a fast fix now.

    Thanks.

    Control Panel, Folder Options, View
Click the radio button to 'Show hidden files and folders'
Uncheckmark "hide protected operating system files (recommended)

    Look again.

The other site did say something about moving but was good when I gave it before but you are correct it is bad now.

Try this if you want it:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=414&file=15&evp=0247605a024f49b599edf45189b26e2c

It seems you still have some kind of permissions issue. Likely Registry inherited permmisions.

You may try the actual Administrator account instead of your current user account. If you have XP Home it will only be available in safe mode and have no password.

Thanks Bill. Sometimes I feel like a real dork working on this computer. Anyway, yes I found the file {929408E6....etc} but I did not see a489bd3.msi When I ran regedit to search for the file, it returned nothing (it just said it was finished searching the registry, but nothing was showing on the right side). Am I doing something wrong with the regedit?

Mike, I was running from the administrator account in Safe Mode, not my personal account. That is where I was unable to delete.
