Bill, I can't get your link to work. Twice it sent me to a page expired window and now it just freezes.

Yeah I get the same on the link also, give it a few minutes perhaps the site is down.

    In the meantime.

    Download and install
    Dial-A-Fix
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...al-a-fix.shtml

Dial-A-Fix is very safe it only reinstalls scripting etc, and tries to re register important DLL's that may have become unregistered.

But another important thing it does, is as it does its thing it may fail or not find what it is supposed to find.

These are the things you need to put back into your system. Most times it does not find missing files. When it does write them down.

    Run it:
    Clear Restrictive policies

then check every box and click go
Make note of errors (missing files etc) write them down

After these finish click the Hammer for the tools menu and run only
    Repair permissions.

Then retry the Regeeker in Safe Mode.

As soon as you get to the site do Bill's process also.

    Mike

Thank you for advising the difficulty with the link. I will investigate.

In any case, download HijackThis from its author: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php

It is a .ZIP file, so some housekeeping needs to be done.

Click My Computer, and click your C drive.
Change the Windows Explorer to the root of drive C:, C:\
Right-click a blank area of the screen, New, Folder
    Rename the Folder Hijack

Download the .zip file to location: C:\Hijack
    Unzip it.

Run the HijackThis.exe file found in the folder with a double click.

    Smile!

Thanks Charles looks like we are having Link problems today. I get the same now also.

OH yes. Dial-A-Fix is nice, suprised it hasn't been mentioned on the board before.

It is powerful but is also easy for a Novice (like me) to use. Smile!

I run it on some workstations if I have an undefined problem. Because if it complains there are important DLL's or other files missing and it will tell you which.

Thanks for giving us a workable link.

Dial-a-fix is essentially a more aggressive DLL registration program than say, MS-MVP Ramash Srinivasan's IEFix: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

But it really does not bear on the issues at hand in this post.

It adds to the Ramesh list of registrations DLLs dealing with the Cryptographic, and Windows Update service that Ramesh does not try to re-register.

It does reset LSP and other entries, that I would rather not have done, personally.

I vote with Ramesh if this process needs to be done.

But in any case, it is not on point in this thread.

    Oh no Bill

IEFIX is just a 14k program to try and default IE. Not even sure it is ready for IE7.

Yes, Dial-a-fix is very agressive in re registration of "Operating system" DLL's not just IE.

But it uses all native functions to do these things. It deals with Installer, VB runtimes, scripting, permission ,restrictive policies, ssl, cryptography, signing verification, COM, ActiveX, missing registry entries and more.

    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

    http://www.timeatlas.com/mos/Useful_Utilities/Free/Dial_a_Fix_Repairs_Windows_Update_Problems/

Not Apples to Apples with IEFIX.

Does things you and I can do in Native mode but is easier to have a novice shotgun all of the above to make certain all is well.

As I said when run if it complains then there are basic OS issues. And it names names so the files can be found and restored.

Should I go ahead with the dial-a-fix or wait on it?

    I advise you run Dial-a-fix.

It should fix the permissions issue and perhaps other unknown problems.

It can be done before or after the HijackThis cleanup.

If you run it then go back to safe mde and run the Regseeker cleanups.

Wait for Bill on the HijackThis but here are my thoughts.

Anything with update is usually not needed and can be done directly.
Except for Virus and Spy/Adware updates.

If you don't use Microsoft money then that entry can be removed.

I advise one good major Browser toolbar. I like Google but you have both Google and Yahoo. You can do this if needed but you are better off with just one.

Anything to do with Gambling, Casino or games are usually not needed and are not advised.

If you don't use MSN6 or MSN messenger then they can be removed.

Viewpoint entries are not needed here.

Thanks Mike. Please forgive me being such a greenhorn, but I guess I need more specifics on which of these I need to delete, just how I go about deleting them and I guess I'm not real clear on the differences between the HiJack, Regseeker and dial-a-fix results. A brief explanation would be appreciated.

All HijackThis does is allow you to send back to me a listing of your running processes and their regisry entries.

Hopefully, the forum can identify old instances of Quicktime, and advise you as to how to remove them.

It does not fix anything, it just shows me what is going on, and information that could help to explain your issues.

    OK Snowbird

I only gave general guidelines on the HiJackThis log.

You get rid of these items by running HiJackThis and checking the box by each entry that you want to remove.

For example these could be removed.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.nick.com/

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {243B17DE-77C7-46BF-B94B-0B5F309A0E64} - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyside.dll

    O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dll

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [RealPlayer] "C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe" /RunUPGToolCommandReBoot

    O4 - Global Startup: KODAK Software Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe

    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML

and so on if you see these lines in HiJackThis you can see the party poker and others that are not needed and can be troublesome.

Looks as though the Google bar is damaged as evidenced by the (missing files) etc.

Don't remove anything you might use. Although they can be reinstalled later if needed.

So look carefully at each line and put a check in the above and any others that you don't use.

Even the entries that have COMCAST (likely your ISP) are really unnecessary.

Remember that Bill is going to advise you on the log. Wait and see if he aggrees with me on these entries if you want.

The Regseeker HiJackThis and Dial-a-fix are all separate processes that need to be run separately. And all need to be run as previously posted.

    Dial-a-fix first.

    Mike

Thank you for the HijackThis log.

While you have some entries I would remove, all are optional and just me being fussy. There is no clear evidence of malware, so congratulations on that at least.

Let me suggest a brand new approach. Download and install older versions of Quicktime until we find one that makes the installer happy:

Ugh! Ok I did download an older version of QuickTime and it worked just fine. But when I then tried to download iTunes I got the same error message (An older version of QuickTime cannot be removed, contact your technical support group). Sigh. Back to square one. I thought about downloading an older version of iTunes but the (older version) site said iTunes is not available. Will running dial-a-fix help? Mike, how will deleting the items you mentioned from my HiJackThis log help this particular problem, I will be glad to do that if it will help. I believe I still have the permission problems to delete files in Regseeker since I don't remember fixing those. In any case, I really appreciate all of the help from each of you.

BTW, Mike, Your link to dial-a-fix is not working. I did a search at the site and found the download for dial-a-fix. I'm trying to download it now. Thanks for the information about the site.

Installing an earlier version of Quicktime should work. You need to patiently try one, if it does not work, remove it with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. And try again. But see my notes on restoring permissions as a first step, and the need to reboot as you cycle through older versions.

Start at the bottom of the list (the most recent versions) and work upwards (towards the oldest), as there is a specific version it wants to find the uninstaller for.

On the question of permissions. Since your are using XP Professional, do not fool around with this. There is a native way to restore the default permission settings that effect both your security settings on Folders in the System Volume, and the registry.

See the Microsoft how-to Knowledge Base article here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

Please do as the KB article recommends, Reboot, and then go through the chore of installing and if necessary removing earlier Quicktime versions. My own guess it wants the version third from the bottom, but please start at the bottom and work upwards.

Please reboot after the "new" older Quicktime install, and prior to the new iTunes or whatever installation.

Ok forget the Hijack cleanup it only has a bearing on general performance.

And since you have installed quicktime and it works we would not do the regseeker process untill we do a proper uninstall, which is no longer nessesary.

    So do the Dial-a-fix.

And NO it is not garanteed to fix your problem but is more like general maintenance. But it very well could.

There are 3 messages about my link not working. Do you need to review this entire thread?

In case you don't let me remind you to make note of any files not found or other errors reported by dial-a-fix.

Mike, I regret that I missed the earlier references to the link not working. I had in mind that they referred to the HiJackThis link, which was also not working. Apparently I do need to review the thread from time to time. I did not get any messages referring to missing files while running dial-a-fix.

Bill, I will follow your advice and be more methodical with the QuickTime downloads. Thanks for your patience.

I found the version of QuickTime that I need (7.0.3). When I tried to download that I got the following messages:

    1. Setup could not find a file on the specified path or disk. Please check that the proper disk is inserted or specify a new path. Unable to locate file C:\Documents\my name\locals\Temp\_is1D\QuickTime.msi

    2. error 1714 The older version of QuickTime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

    3. error 1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.
