Have a look in your event viewer (note the time you shutdown) and see if you can find any errors/notes listed after the shutdown command.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

Event viewer doesn't show any problems at shut down. Just one warning a few hours earlier. Application: EvntAgnt - trace level parameter not located in registry. Default used 32. System DCOM - server did not register with DCOM within the required time.

    Hi Steve,

OK, since you're feeling brave, lets do this: Follow my instructions for the Registry Editor and in the Find next box, type (or copy and paste): HungApp Timeout.

Change the value to 500. Then keep hitting F3 until you're done. Reboot and then shutdown.

    Any joy?

    Here's something that's really off-the-wall: Do you use a 3-D Screen Saver?

Very strange. I rebooted and shut down. For the first time in 3 weeks my computer shut down as it should! I repeated the exercise several times and the system hung at "saving settings" every time. I checked regedit and figure is still at 500.
Also tried turning off screen saver (instead of picassa pictures) but this made no difference. Event viewer only shows an error on startup Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 7022
    Date: 19/12/2010
    Time: 1:17:31 p.m.
    User: N/A
    Computer: BROWNEHOME
    Description:
The MSCamSvc service hung on starting.

    Hi Steve,

OK, we're narrowing it down. Here's what I'd like you to do now: Click on Start, Run, and in the box type in msconfig and click OK. Then click on the Startup tab.

How many items are in there? I'm starting to think that a program is trying to update itself and it's interfering with the shutdown process.

You may have cracked it:) I disabled all 7 items and it shut down properly. Items were:
NvCpl NvMcTray (both RUNDLL32.exe), avgtray (antivirus), AWC (Advanced System Care program), ALCMTR ALCMTR.EXE (no idea what this does), EM_EXEC (C:\Program_1\mousew_1 (not using a wireless mouse ??), ctfmon (C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ctfmon.exe

I restored NvCpl, NvMcTray and avgtray. No problems with the shutdown!

I'll try more experimenting in an hour or two.

    Many thanks for your help

steve, since you have narrowed down your shut down problem to your startup programs, download and run Autoruns. After you have extracted the folder run the autoruns.exe program. When the program opens click the Logon tab. From there you will be able to manage your startup items much better than in msconfig.

Since you re-enabled Nvcpl, Nvmctray and avgtray you just have to narrow the startup items down until you find the culprit.

Thanks for that. A useful program by the look of it.
My computer is now happily shutting down on demand :) (about 40sec)

    Hi Steve,
Hooray!!! :D I knew it had to be something somewhere! :p

There are a few other things we could have tried, but since you're shutting down now and not hanging, it's not necessary.

    Congrats!
