Unable to install Microsoft. net framework 3.5 SP1

    Hi all,
    My problem is automatic updates and manual attempts to download Microsoft.net framework 3.5 Servicepack etc fail everytime. I already have SP3 installed. One of you knowledgeable guys previously provided me with a KB number for something else and your advice worked. On that occasion I was with another ISP and when I transferred to my current ISP I lost my e-mail address so it wasn't possible for me ask for my password which I had forgotten. Hence the reason i have registered again.

    If anybody has a simple remedy to this problem I should be most grateful.

    Is your copy of Windows genuine? If not,you will not be able to get downloads (except critical updates) from Microsoft.

    Hi there,
    Yes my Windows was already installed on my Packard Bell when I purchased it from PC World back in 2007. I have had all their updates successfully installed since purchase. But this one? I googled the problem a couple of times and there are lots out there who are having the same problem. All of the solutions are quite involved. I was wondering that if there is an issue with this download, why haven't Microsoft created a KB for it? It's becoming a nuisance as sometimes when I attempt to put the PC into standby it tries to install but fails.

    Bligh,you're quite welcome. I wasn't suggesting that you were running pirated software,but I recently got burned for a counterfeit Windows XP Pro distro on eBay. Sometimes even repair shops even get ripped off. Anyway,you may wish to contact the PC manufacturer to check for a solution, if you haven't already done so. Don't give up, someware you will find the answer for this very nagging problem. There is a very large Microsoft community out here and alot of us will help, if we can. Hang in there!

    Thanks for replying again. Don't worry I didn't think for one moment you were suggesting I was operating a naughty system. I know that some people do create problems for themselves by using illegal software. I was aware of that.;)

    Hi Bligh. Try downloading .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 from here. Make sure you shut down all background programs that are running in the system tray before starting the installation. If .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 doesn't install do you get an error message?

    Try this,

    1. Download and run the .Net Framework Cleanup tool from, here.

    2. Make sure there are no versions of .net framework listed in Add/Remove programs

    3. Rename the C:/Windows/Assembly folder

    4. Restart the computer

    5. Install .Net Framework 3.5 from, here. Once 3.5 is installed then install .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 from, here.

    Let me know if you can get .Net Framework to install correctly.

    Evan, being an ex-cop Liverpool side of the pond you should have heard some of the names I was called.;)

    Anyway, down to business, your advise worked a treat. Only problem now is I have KB958470 & KB973869 failing to install. Dunno what went wrong with those two. If you could point me in the direction for the solution please.

    I'm off to work for the rest of the day, so hopefully someone will have added the solution by this evening. Unless they don't like ex-cops.:)

    Thats great news. I am happy that you were able to get .Net Framework 3.5 to install successfully. For the 2 updates that you listed that would not install try installing them manually.

    Download, Security Update for Windows XP (KB973869).

    Download, Security Update for Windows XP (KB958470). If the updates do not install is there an error message that you get?

    Try this, click Start< Run and type services.msc and press enter. The Services window will open. Scroll down and find the Automatic Updates Service. Make sure the startup type is set to Automatic and that it is started. If its not started then start the service. Do the same thing for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Next scroll down to the Windows Installer service and make sure its set to manual. Don't start the Windows Installer service though. Once you have verified those services close the services window. Next download and run, Dial A Fix. Open the program and remove any restricted policies if the program finds any. Select all the checkboxes under Windows Update and click the Go button. Once Dial A Fix has finished running close the program and reboot the computer. Attempt to install the updates again.

    I searched for the troubleshoot to install .net framework 3.5 for hours and finally stumbled upon this forum..

    Had some problems installing VB Express - stuck when trying to install the .net framework. So frustrated!

    Finally...
    thanks a lot for the tips!!
    managed to install VB Express.. yeay!

    This is the only reason why I registered myslef to WBBS forum - just to thank you guys!!
