    Good Morning Newt

Yes. It sure can go either way. But the attempt to help never hurts.

To the best of my knowledge I did not have to call my ISP when I put my Router in service. But the RAM in my body has gotten to be MORE RANDOM ( or may even FAIL ) as time goes by.

As to the MAC addresses. I have noticed that even though Router assigned IP of this machine may change from x.x.x.101 at one time to x.x.x.102 another time the MAC address of my NIC does stay the same.

    Now a question.

Knowing that I have things working quite well ( so far ) would I be better off to go with an eight port switch rather than a new Router ?

Or could it be a case of " Its working. Leave it alone. " I do not really need any more. It was mostly the idea me getting bored and messing with something new.

I am a great fan of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." This together with your comments (perhaps on another thread) about your satisfaction with your current router, leads me to the conclusion that I'd leave the router as is and add a switch.

As I think we may have discussed in a previous thread, I'd recommend connecting all the PC to the switch and then having a single uplink to the router from the switch.

Unfortunately, adding a switch won't satisfy your need to have something to fiddle with. A small switch should be a plug in and forget device. You won't even have to reconfigure your existing router.

If you're getting bored, start learning scripting/programming. There's no end of fun to be had there!

    Oh and "Afternoon ssmith10pn" :D

Well for the time being the Switch/Router problem is off the list of things to do. But I am leaning more toward a Switch.

I just discovered this AM that it looks like AOL and/or Yahoo ( they both have folders under Program Files ) had taken over my Wifes' machines. IE6 does not work well at all. No Graphics or Audio from the Internet.

I thought at first it might be Video/Audio Driver related. But I ( have not ruled it out ) turned away from that idea because Auido & Graphics play/display just fine when opened directly from the HD.

If someone wishes to they may move my previous reply and this one to the proper place if they think it should be. Because it sure has NOTHING to do with Networking.

The problem I wrote about appears to have been a problem with DirectX.

There was a Critical update/Service pack for DX9. I tried to install same but it would show up again after I restarted and went back to Windows Update.

So then I installed Windows update for DirectX9.0C End User Runtime and the Windows Update for Vector Graphics Rendering and all seems to be OK now.

Critical Update does not show any more.

I also found that something had stollen some of the Audio associations away from Media Player.

But anyway all seems to be working OK now.

But BEFORE I did any of this I ran. Cleaner3 ( trojan ) AVG AV and AdAware. :):) ALL CLEAN. :):)
