    Thanks, Broni. For some reason I have only just found this posting. I'll get on to it.

    FTR: I installed and ran SlimCleaner Plus. The improvement is substantial. We are not out of the woods yet, but things are a whole lot better.

    Ran AdwCleaner, JRT, RogueKiller, TFC, and SlimCleaner yesterday with no gremlins.
    Uninstalled Media Go and deactivated Windows Defender.

    Somewhere on the line I have had a day with perhaps one delay.

    Media Go is a Sony product I downloaded for some reason. It has a bit of a murky reputation.

    I did not know anything about Defender, but someone suggested that it could be clashing with Kaspersky.

    Anyway - things seem to be normal at last.
