If I remember correctly (and unless Arie has changed the BBS policy), one must be a contributing member, or staff, in order to add attachments (screenshots, normally) to posts.

    Ramona,

First, I did try to open the "get mail" file from the location that I had saved it to. Hopefully there was no damage done?

I followed your instructions and I now have an option on the TOOLS drop down menu for Get Mail with two options. Read Mail and New Message. When I click on Read Mail, NOTHING happens. When I click on New Message a compose window opens. Any idea what I did wrong now? Is nothing simple for me?

On the attachment thing, I had checked the "Additional Options" yesterday thinking that there was something I was missing or you guys were performing magic. <G>

When I scroll down to Additional Options I have 3 choices: Misc.Options ( Automatically parse links in text, which is checked and Disable smilies in text which is not checked.

The second option is: Thread Subscription with choices for Notification Type.

The third option is: "Rate thread“.

I see no further options for dealing with attachments.

I’m beginning to feel very stupid about everything. How can I not have the same options as you?

One last thing. I notice that on the Add-On box I have an item named DOM Inspector. I don’t even know what it is and don’t know how it got there. Does Firefox require that or something?

    Hi Pat,

Re attachments: you have to be a contributing member to post attachments.

The DOM Inspector is installed by default when you choose the "Standard" installation. Had you chosen the "Custom" installation, instead, you would have been given the option not to install it. It's not required, and most users will never have any use for it.

    Vegaspat,
on the Get Mail|Read Mail issue, I don't know. It happens to me, at times. and, invariably, it was a case of a lousy shot. I try again, making sure that I hit it right. There may be something else, may be related to the OS, but I would not know. In fact, I have Get Mail in two browsers, FF2.0.0.3, and the newly downloaded 3.0a4 (the future Firefox). Get Mail is compatible with the very newest browser.
I would not lose any sleep on the attachment thing. I never looked at Additional Options, and, attachments work fine.

Not that I will ever have to do an attachment here, how do you attach anything here if you don't use the Advanced Options? Just curious.

So there is nothing I should do to get the "Get Mail" to work properly? Try installing it again?

On your part 1 of your questions, all I do is to click on the Attach button. You will see the attachment name in the upper right window.
Part 2: if you tried to click, at least another time, on the Get Mail button, which you dragged and dropped on the top toolbar from View|Toolbar|Customize, and still failed to open your mail, you have two choices. One is to reinstall. By the way I drag and drop the file by left clicking|drag and drop in the Addon window, with the browser minimized. I never right clicked, but it should not matter as you have New Message working. You can use the icon or go to Tools|Get Mail.
Or, if you fail to make it work even after reinstalling,. what can I say? I would give up.

    vegaspat,

As explained, you have to anti up your $19.95 for a subscription to WindowsBBS:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/subscribe.php Then you have the option to attach a file to your Reply. Sorry about that, as I thought you were a contributing member.

There is another way, and that is, if you have a web page, you can upload the file to your web page, and then post the link on the Forum. I do that frequently, as you can see, if you mouseover some of the links for screen shots, etc. In this thread, the screen shot I mentioned is posted on one of my web pages, and I linked to the page: http://home.att.net/~cherokee68/mailacctlist.html

Most ISP's allow a certain amount of web space to each subscriber. You might check with yours to see how much is allowed.

Not 100% sure, abut I think you have to have TB set as default mail....
I use SM as Default mail and "get mail" causes an error message......

"SEAMON~1.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

With TB as "default mail" it works as advertised....

    But I could be wrong.

I re-installed and this time tried left clicking when dragging and dropping. Still have only half of the options. Can get a Compose window but can not open the mailbox. Strange that I seem to be the only one to ever have these problems. I guess I'll quit beating a dead horse and forget about it. At some time perhaps it will just start working. I'll just do what I had already started doing. Opening both programs and flip back and forth.

On the first part of your question you must be referring to the Compose window, not this board? I attach all the time when sending messages. Just couldn't do it here.

    Ramona,

Thanks for the compliment. I couldn't contribute to anything. Not smart or patient enough. <G> As for a web page forget it. I'm pretty sure my local ISP has the what ever I would need but my next project is figuring Vista out enough to get by. I had barely figured XP out and here I go again.

BTW, I think I am going to really like Firefox and Thunderbird. Thanks to YOU folks.

I can't figure out why TB does not open the Read Mail, but it opens New Message.

Where do you find the option to set Thunderbird as the Default?

I looked around and couldn't find anyway to do that. Of course I haven't been able to find much of anything this week.

    Thanks.

If TB is not default mail, it shud ask when you start TB ( unless you selected = "Dont' display dialog......" )

It was already checked for Thunderbird as the default.

Darn, I thought that might be the answer. No such luck.

Really strange that it doesn't work correctly.

Thanks anyway. I'll take all the suggestions available.

Your problems, surely, helped me. I will go briefly on my issues.
I have decided to download Thunderbird2.0rc1, meaning that it is close to the final release. I found that it worked, but with nothing, obviously, improved. However, when I clicked on the Get Mail|Read Mail, nothing happened. I tried again holding down my enter, and, immediately, saw that it was something wrong. 2.0rc1 had stolen default, and there was no way to change that, that I could see. The Mail box was prechecked and grayed out.
With firefox, I tried a nightly of 3.0a4, and although I used the unzipped file, it was found in the Add/Remove. It had also stolen default from FF2.0.0.3.
To add insult to injury IE7 opened when I decided to fill my survey on why I decided to "uninstall" something which I had not even installed.
I had to go into the mail application, and check that I wanted to make it default, although I had never made anything else default., to have the Get Mail work properly. In other words testing these programs caused IE7 to become default, and, obviously, nothing was available when I tried the Get Mail|Read Mail extention.
We may not learn much from this, except to stay away from future versions, till they fix them.

I got up this morning, hoping the Get Mail thing worked. It didn't.

Then I got to thinking that I hadn't seen OE on this new Vista machine. What a challenge that was. The name has been changed to Windows Mail. To be on the safe side I checked the default settings. No problem there.

I think I'm in for a very long and tedious ordeal with so many things to figure out.

IF you ever have any more ideas about the Get Mail thing please let me know.

Are there any other "mail "programs that will work with Mozilla products?

Thunderbird works. It is just the Get Mail which gives problems. I don't know if any others would be brought up. That is why I presented my ordeal with the new versions.

Sorry, I mis-worded it. I meant a "link" between Firefox and Thunderbird.

While I have you here I have another question. I received a wmv file this week and today when I tried to forward it was on the message was on hold for over an hour. I finally had to close it down.

I've received and forwarded a ton of those mini movies with no problem. Of course the download and upload is slow because of my dial-up connection.

I checked all the settings because of the size of the file and didn't see any maximums set. I also tried to send it in Messenger and the same thing happened.

I could see McAfee working so I disabled that and still no luck. Does this sound like an ISP problem or an email program problem?

    Pat,

Most ISP's have a 10MB limit, so if your WMV file is larger than that size, that could be your problem, however you said it was a small file. I would look first to your ISP, especially in view of the fact that they were down just a short time ago. To be certain it isn't Thunderbird, do this:

Try again, only this time, also disable your Firewall, and your AntiVirus. If you use ZoneAlarm, it is often the culprit when you have a problem with mail. I have switched to Sygate, because I got tired of dealing with ZA.

I've spent the entire evening trying to determine why that file won't go. It is a 3MB file which is not unusually big. Sent and received larger ones than that.

McAfee came on this new PC or I wouldn't mess with it. I plan on getting rid of it as soon as I can figure out what I'm doing.

I disabled the outgoing mail scan but can't find where to temporarily disable the whole program. At least with Norton I knew how to do that.

I know that my ISP can handle 3MB so until I can figure out the McAfee and can rule that out I 'm not sure what to do.

Getting really frustrated with the whole thing. It's been one thing after the other.

    Thanks.

    Pat,

To disable McAfee, and this won't hurt a thing on your lovely new system:

In the System Tray on your desktop, right-click the McAfee VirusShield (VShield) icon and select "Exit" from the pop-up menu.

If you are presented with the VShield Dialog box explaining you are attempting to turn off background scanning, select the "Yes" button.

The VirusShield icon should disappear from the system tray if you have successfully disabled McAfee VirusScan/Vshield.

You can turn the program back on by double clicking on the McAfee Desktop shortcut, or by going to McAfee's C:\Program Files folder, find the McAfee execute file, and double click.

Did you also disable your Firewall?
