I am trying to download updates for H&R Block At Home Deluxe tax software, but am unable to. I keep getting the message:

"This patch packet could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer patch package. "

I am using Windows 7 Home Version on a brand-new computer.

Info on Microsoft websites are of no help. H&R Block does not have a clue how to fix it either. I have uninstalled & reinstalled the software twice. Anyone else having similar problems?

Hi rlp2451, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Try this fix, How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues.

Do you have UAC enabled? Did you try right clicking the patches and clicking Run As Administrator?

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Post the MSI error from the Event Viewer.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start and type eventvwr.msc in the Start Search box & hit Enter.

Check your Application and System logs under Windows Logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

Try running the update elevated. Right-click and choose Run as administrator.

I tried that early on in the process, but thanks for the suggestion.

I finally fixed it by restoring the computer to orignal(factory) settings. Took a while to do, but seems to be working fine now.
