    Hey Christer,
    Thanks for the welcome!

I have tried uninstalling the offending updates (KB3065987 didn't have this installed, only KB3075851)

No luck there unfortunately on two devices. I even tried a rollback using Windows Restore a couple of times to the farthest I can remember before the issue started happening. No luck there as well. Wish I had a backup image right about now.

Quite an odd problem, will explore more I guess!

P.S: I believe something somewhere might have fudged up the Windows Update registry. I did have the Windows 10 upgrade update installed at one point but promptly removed that. Don't think it was related but it might be. I'll see if I can find a reference point for WU registry.

    UPDATE: SUCCESS!!
Having remove the culprit updates, I thought it may be something related to OSU and Windows 10 roll out. The answer was in one of the links above.
"Using Group Policy MMC snap-in: run gpedit.msc, expand Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components, select Windows Update Center and enable the "Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update" policy. "
Seems that OS upgrade disables the notifications in the icon try, perhaps specifically after removing the update that gives the OSU icon. However, after you get the icon back and you reverse what you did in gpedit.msc, the windows update icon stays. What ever it does, it seemed to have rebuilt tray icon notifications.

That snap-in component does not work with Home Premium I presume?

gpedit.msc is available in Windows 10 Professional. I tried it on my friends home version of win 10 and couldn't get the console to come up. I got an error message.

    Hey James,
Unfortunately Windows 7 Home does not have gpedit.msc (As far as I know)
However there are solutions to installing it on your system and running it. You might want to look into that.

I misread the OP sorry about that Group Policy Editor is only available in Windows Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions.

    Thanks, guys, I thought so.

I'll check and see if any of these mentioned updates are installed on my system, although I do not allow automatic updates, so they may not be there.

Found and uninstalled KB3075851 on both 7 machines. Ran Windows Update manually, and the update was not reoffered.

However, I am still not getting Windows Update icon alerts in the tray. I guess I'll have to try Marco's suggestion if I can locate the correct exe.

Group Policy Editor is not available in Home editions, but you can try the registry hack described in Step 2 in the following article: http://www.howtogeek.com/228551/how...-8-from-downloading-windows-10-automatically/. There's also a .reg file you can apply if you don't want to fiddle with the registry manually. What Group Policy does is basically the same change to the registry.

    Hey James,
The following has to be enabled and left enabled in the group policy editor:
"Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update "
My theory is that the latest version notification remains in the system despite removing the updates, and that notification itself disables windows update notifications replacing it with windows upgrade if it was found in your system.
    Good luck

I have suspected a connection between the missing Icon and the updates to the Windows Update Client.

In post #16, SlimShaggy offers some suggestions that I in post #18 assume to not be the solution on my system since it has no updates whatsoever pertaining to the "free W10 upgrade" and it said nothing about "restoring a WU-icon missing in the Notification Area ".

I have also experienced performance issues (excessive CPU- and RAM-usage) when Windows Update does its thing. I have a discussion going at RADIFIED which is more in-depth and it lead me to investigate all updates to the Windows Update Client.

The first one, KB2990214 (important) released in April, updating the Windows Update Agent to version 7.6.7601.18804. At this time, my "performance issues" started but the Icon was still there.

Problems with KB2990214 led to KB3050265 (optional) being released in June, updating the Windows Update Agent to version 7.6.7601.18847. Since it was optional, I didn't even look at it.

KB3065987 (optional) was released in July, updating the Windows Update Agent to version 7.6.7601.18917. Since it was optional, I didn't even look at it.

KB3075851 (important) was released in August, updating the Windows Update Agent to version 7.6.7601.18937. Since it was important, I installed it, noticing the missing Icon in addition to the "performance issues ". I used Ghost to roll back the system to not include this update (but still KB2990214).

KB3083324 (important) was released in September, updating the Windows Update Agent to version 7.6.7601.18979. I tried installing it with the same result, using Ghost to roll back.

KB3083710 (important) was released in October, updating the Windows Update Agent to version 7.6.7601.19016. I tried installing it with the same result, using Ghost to roll back.

All these updates replace eachother consecutively and I started reading the KB-articles. In KB3050265 it says:

I installed KB3083710, but did not apply the regedit. This alone was an improvement regarding the "performance issues ". Next, I applied the regedit but the performance saw no further improvement.

However, after a reboot and a second run of Windows Update, the WU-Icon reappeared in the Notification Area. There is not a word mentioning "restoring a WU-icon missing in the Notification Area" or am I missing it (selective blindness)?

No matter what, my suspicion on a connection between the missing Icon and the updates to the Windows Update Client was proven to be correct and I can't help wondering what the guys in Richmond are smoking?

Just looked in again Christer. Have you Downloaded KB3035583 from the update center? This is supposed to be the 'Get W10 Icon ". Neil.

I forgot to reply to LJ's post (#31) about the same update ... ... sorry about that!

I can confirm that KB3035583 is the "get Windows 10" update. I had it installed, just to test, among other updates pertaining to migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10 but all have been removed by restoring a Ghost Image.

At present, I have no updates pertaining to Windows 10 installed.

I thought that I had no updates pertaining to the Windows Update Client but I did have KB2990214. The history is in post #33.

I checked this morning when I started Windows 7:

    10:15 - pushed the button

10:17 - up and running with Taskmanager started
    CPU-usage ~0% - RAM-usage ~25%

10:20 - WU-Icon appears in the Notification Area and TrustedInstaller in Taskmanager
    CPU-usage ~25% - RAM-usage ~45%

    10:35 - change in CPU-usage
    CPU-usage ~0% - RAM-usage ~45%

    10:35 - change in CPU-usage and RAM-usage
    CPU-usage ~25% - RAM-usage ~50%

    10:42 - change in CPU-usage and RAM-usage
    CPU-usage ~0% - RAM-usage ~45%

10:47 - TrustedInstaller disappears in Taskmanager
    CPU-usage ~0% - RAM-usage ~25%

I checked Windows Update and the most recent search for updates was at 10:27

I checked MSE and its definitions were updated at 10:35.

10:35 coincides with the intermittent drop in CPU-usage. Does it mean that WU did its thing between 10:20 to 10:35 and MSE did its thing between 10:35 and 10:42?

What does it do for 25 minutes (no apparent network activity) when it should be done in a few minutes, tops?

    I know, I know ... :p ... I should get a life!

I have a discussion going over at RADIFIED:

The fact that Microsoft is working on it indicates that I'm not alone. Does anyone of our MVP's have a big enough foot in the door at Microsoft to get some information regarding "what it is (actually) doing "?

By the way, "released as optional a week or two ago" was week #45 and "re-released this Tuesday" was week #46.
