    Hi dkline,

That's so funny. Happy to provide you with the entertainment and solve my computer problem in the meantime. Mike was definitely the main character, an IT superhero, out to save the world, well mine anyway. Here's hoping it's a happily ever after story without a sequel! (And yes, I surprised myself on many occasions)

    Hi Mike,

Not sure if you're still watching this thread but I've got a quick question. Earlier I told you I had an email that I couldn't delete. You suggested holding shift then delete. This worked and I haven't had a problem until yesterday. Now if we want to delete an email we have to do the shift delete thing or we can't get rid of it. Can this be fixed so we just have to hit delete?

    Hi Sue

Is the "Deleted Items" empty? If not, rt click and empty. Will it let you do that?

If not Dbl Click to enter the "Deleted Items" folder if there are any items then highlight and Delete using Shift as I directed ealier.

If there were items in the BIN and you were able to delete them with the Shift Delete and were able to clear the BIN now try a normal delete from your Inbox.

Do this and get back to us.

    Hi Mike,

Deleting the deleted items wasn't a problem, they would delete whether I pressed just delete or shift delete. I ended up clearing the lot from the edit menu. Now I can delete normally, was it just because I had too many in the deleted items folder?

    Thanks
    Sue

A few points re. Outlook Express ....

The maximimum size of the folders Inbox, Outbox, Deleted items, etc is 2Gb, but OE plays funny long before that limit is reached.

The other cause of 'strange' behaviour is a corrupted folder.

Deleting items from the Deleted Items folder does not necessarily clear those items from the folder itself - only from the view in OE. When the files are compacted that is when they are cleared out completely.

I suggest you do the following - I am guessing that there may be some corruption in your Deleted Items folder .....

Search for *.dbx files - include hidden and system files. With OE closed delete Deleted Items.dbx - it will be recreated the next time OE is opened.

Then consider activating this setting .....

Tools > Tools > Options > Maintenance and check ' Empty messages from the Deleted Items folder on exit'.

    Hi Sue

You should keep the Deleted Files bin emptied.

Another cleanup is to go thu the Sent items and empty as many as you can. The Sent Items include every email you ever sent, some you may want to keep.

Do you have many messages in the Inbox? A lot of people just leave messages they want to keep in the Inbox.

Here is what you should do!

Rt Click Local Folders-New Folder, Name it (Example) WindowsBBS and click OK!

Then in the Inbox hold down the Ctrl key while left clicking each message from us WindowsBBS after all are highlighted then rt click any one of the highlighted and chose Move to Folder. Then select the WindowsBBS folder and dbl click.

This will move the windowsbbs messages into its own folder and clean up your InBox.

Now repeat this with other messages. If you and your husband both use the same email address make one for Sue and one for husband and move all these.

    Etc!

Once you have cleaned your InBox then do the below.

    In OE click Tools-Options-Maintenance-Cleanup Now.

Then click RESET (no it will not delete messages) and after that is finished click Compact!

This will get OE clean and Lean!

    Mike
