I cannot get the icons I want in the far right portion (name ?) of the Taskbar. I have right clicked on a blank portion of the taskbar and gone to the advanced setting. There I can specify for each program whether I want it always hidden, always shown or shown when needed. It does not do what I select. I want always shown the icons for Skype, Microsoft Security Essentials, and sound. Sometimes I get Skype only. I get a Dell Support icon always even though I say always hidden. At one time I had it the way I wanted but I do not know how to restore that.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

The far right of the taskbar is called the SysTray. Maybe that will help in your search.

Windows' "System Restore" can roll Windows back to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly?System Restore helps you restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time. It's a way to undo system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

What flavor of Windows are you running? Win 7 is a little different than the earlier versions.

Please go to User CP near the top left of this page and fill out your system specs. Be sure to save them when you are done.

Right click on Start, left click on Properties then left click the Taskbar tab and go from there.

I am sure the path you suggested should fix the problem. But, I had tried that numerous times without sucess. Also, another suggestion was to use System Restore which I am sure would work, but I feel sure there must be a way without doing that. I want to try for a different solution before I System Restore.

I have had success using a the "Hide or Show Inactive Icons - Notification Area" in the right-hand column on line 53 of this Kelly's Korner page

If that one doesn't sort things out, using the "Remove Past Items From Notification Area" file on the same line, same page will do as its name states.

After using that second fix, some icons which you use may also seem to disappear but they reappear after a reboot...or they always have for me.

Resolved. I did use System Restore even through I was trying to avoid that. It was sucessful and my icons are back in the Sys Tray. I went back a month and now have to restore all the updates that were wiped out. Also, the path suggested by Mr. Bill now seems to work although it did not before the restore. Any way, thanks to all for your replys.

You have not filled out your specs or have not saved them. They would show below your name as My System like mine and others do.

You should see near the top right on the blue bar to mark your thread as resolved.
