    Try Start > Run > type cmd > hit enter, and in the black command window type set and hit enter. Look at the path= ; it should be (assuming your windows is on C):
    Path=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS
    and possibly other additions at the end placed there by other programs .
    If it isn't, copy the line above (Path=C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS) and paste it into autoexec.bat, a file in the root, i.e., c:\
    Reboot and then try again to run regedit from the Run window.

    I just tested with your suggestion and I do see it as you show and also other things after. And in the process I learned something. I had not done anything like that before. ( in XP anyway )

    But the idea may be the same. If that path statement is not correct things may not run correctly.

    Also I believe the only PROPER way get out of that DOS window is by typing EXIT. Then press ENTER. I learned that lesson the HARD way back in 98.

    Hello there

    I just read your posts about autoexec.bat and like you Billybob I also changed from 98SE to XP (mine to XP home and your to XP pro - also I installed the upgrade and you not) I have done a search on my PC and I do not have an autoexec.bat file in my root. Im assuming that my root is C:\ , however I did find an autoexec.bat file in C:\Windows\command\ebd - I opened and read thru it in notepad and it seems to be from 98. Please help

    Good Morning Fellow Members.

    First off I can not even find a C:\Window\Command folder.

    Nickynoo
    Has brougt out one of The TOUGHEST reasons which makes helping here VERY TUFF at times. Something is here for me. Somewhere else for John Doe. And still somewhere else for Jane Doe. Why that is ? Who the H*** knows.

    I just checked and in my Root folder of the C: drive I find;

    Autoexec.bat----11/10/2004
    Autoexec.dos----1/8/2003
    Autoexec.nt---5/30/2005--Is this the one that is actually used ??
    Autoexec.syd----2/9/2004

    ***********************************
    Existing Autoexec.bat

    REM @H:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe
    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6
    SET SBPCI=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\AUDIO\DOSDRV
    SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\;E:\IMS;E:\QTW\BIN;H:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6

    *************************************
    Autoexec.NT

    REM *************************************************
    REM ** Lines below this have been migrated from the
    REM ** original Windows 98 settings.
    REM *************************************************
    REM

    REM C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\bootup.exe
    SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6
    SET SBPCI=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\AUDIO\DOSDRV
    SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

    PATH=C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6;E:\QTW\BIN;E:\IMS;C:\C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\system32 **************************************
    I see that there are changes but also holdovers. The refs to AVG in the Auto.bat are deffinetly wrong. NOW. But it also says I had AVG on H: at one time. It ( the NT one ) is also wrong because I do not have AVG6 in the location pointed to. It is AVG7.

    Am I going to change it ? NO-NO ( not now anyway unless someone thinks I should.

    I also need the DOS parts as I still have a few DOS programs. They are slowly leaving but a few remain.

    Is that saying the AVG6 modified the Autoexec but AVG7 did not ?? Looks like it to me.

    E:\QTW\BIN;E:\IMS;
    This MUST BE there or Cowboy Casino will not run.

    I used the Pro Upgrade over top of 98SE.

    OK folks. I was a bit later in arising this AM and have only had one cup of coffee. So I will quite for now and be back later. ( IF someone does not have a list of things to do. LOL.

    Windows does not use the autoexec.bat or the config.sys files sometimes found in the root of c:, but it does notice them and usually comments out the directives they contain, or deletes them altogether, so it becomes aware of what's there. Whether it will change its ways accordingly is mute, but worth a try.

    You can drag and drop the autoexec file into the root, or just paste the path statement into notepad and save it as type 'all files' and name it c:\autoexec.bat.

    Hi sparrow - I think that the more I look at my computer (system) I remember the things that were there and are not there now - guess it comes from using DOS, windows3.1 , 95, 98, 2000. XP seems to have done a number on me, it seems to automate and move things, however my computer (seems) to boot up properly so I dont think I should make any changes. I have printed out your post and will change the path statement thingy and see if it help tho. Thanx

    The way XP is set up to change the path is complex:
    Rt. click 'My Computer', choose properties, then the advanced tab and the 'Environment Variables button near the bottom of that window. Click path in the bottom window,and then click edit. The little window that opens will allow you to modify the path, but shows only a small part of the entire path, so first look at the path with a cmd window as I mentioned above, so you have the whole picture in mind.
