    Task Manager

When I do ctl alt del my task manager does not come up, I try it from the run command and it says "Another program is currently using this file" . I try to run regedit and a command prompt window opens up with a heading of C:\\Windows System32\regedit.com and a black cmd window with a block message that is titled 16 bitDOS SubSystem and the message says:
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:054d IP:0102 OP:c7 12 87 fa e8 Chose Close to terminate the application.
I have run SFC, Nortons (both antivirus and system works WinDoctor), RAV online virus scan and AdAware in safe mode.
Task manager works in safe mode but not in normal startup mode. I recently removed Limewire Pro as it started opening on windows startup when it was not set to and I could not close it, each time I closed it, it would start right back up and I couldn't open task manager to stop the process. Following is a HiJackThis Log. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Which will be in several parts since I started windows in Normal startup (not normally but for the log I did)

regedit.com is not a Windows file.

I suspect your PC is infected with the alcan.a worm - for a description and removal instructions see alcan.a worm

I have moved your thread to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum with title edit for more expert attention.

I ran sysclean, with 2 different patterns loaded, the 1st run found and deleted a lot, but said I had the Mugly virus which I looked up on Northons for removal instructions, the 2nd run didn't find anything. Now I am running nortons.

However, sysclean said to delete some registry entries, none were there but it also gave a list in HKEY_Current_User>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion> RunServices HUMMMMMMMMMMMM I didn't have a RunServices in any of my Registry. Seems a little odd to me.

What next? I have used Nortons for years, but what good is it if it does not protect me? I scan and rescan EVERYTHING I open. Lately I have scanned with Nortons AND RAV before opening and both say the file is clean. So if I can't depend on that what can I depend on?

I have been looking at other protection software, any recommendations on what works BEST or better than Nortons? This is the THIRD virus, worm and/or trojan I have had since installing Nortons 2005 (1 week ago) which is both manually updated and set to live update. I upgraded from NIS 2004 to 2005. Never had these problems with NIS 2004.

After running sysclean twice and Nortons, I can now access my registry and my task manager.
But I still do not have any RunServices listed in the registry. I thought that maybe it was something to do with how the permissions were set so I went through and set permissions for myself.
When I go to HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG I saw something I have never seen before it showed a user with read permissions as follows:

Account unknown (S-1-5-32-547) Any Ideas? I unchecked the read permission and it removed this user.

How do I get the RunServices entry back into my registry? I had a backup of my registry which I tried to import but it said some it couldn't because they were in use, so how do you import your backup?

    whompuscat,
Rescan with HJT and remove this item by checking the box to the left of it.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

    Reboot and delete this folder.

    C:\Program Files\Winupdates

It took 10 hours for sysclean to run and then I ran Nortons and it did not find anything.

I knew that winupdates was not suppose to be there but I could not get rid of it. It would not let me delete it in normal or safe mode. SOOOO I got rid of it, I reformated.

Now, does anyone have any suggestions for virus protection that really works? I have always used Nortons, which I still do, but 3 viruses in the last week and like I said I not only scan everything before I open it I scan it twice, so just how did Norton's miss it? And why when I did a scan didn't it find anything when sysclean found 3 virus/trojan/worm??????? Doesn't paint a pretty picture for the reliability of Nortons. (I always do a scan in safe mode).

No piece of antivirus software is perfect and all depend on current virus definitions being loaded. Many, Norton included, use heuristics to block potential virus-like activities for which there is currently no definition, that is, they have yet to be identified as a virus.

I have used Norton Antivirus for a number of years, always the latest version, currently 2005 - and I will upgrade to 2006 when it is released in September and I have never been infected with a virus/worm of any sort.

I have used NAV in conjunction with Zone Alarm (both free & Pro) and currently run Kerio Personal Firewall. I have not used, nor can I comment on, the efficiency of Norton Personal Firewall.

I take it that you have Norton configured to give maximum protection with Worm Blocking and Script Blocking enabled - I fancy they are on by default on a new installation.

Other antivirus programs which get good reports on this Board are AVG Free and Nod32

    Update.......
Although the scan said I was infected with a worm or 2 (which prompted me to reformat my hard drive but even with a fresh install I still got the errors) I finally found the problem with the Generic Host file error. :)

After reading what seems like every post in the world I found that some HP printer software can cause this problem.

I was getting the Generic Host error 12 times at startup and the svchost.exe error every 15-30 seconds.

I have a new printer so you would think that the disk that came with it would be compatible with windows DEP, but evidently not.

I uninstalled the HP software and downloaded the lastest version from HP and now NO errors.

Wanted to post back just in case someone else was experiencing the same problems.

Thanks everyone for your help and input.

P/S: Pete, yes I have it configured for max protection and I did purchase the Norton Personal Firewall/System Works 2005 bundle. But I did not like it so I took it off and put NIS 2004 back on my computer. Just wanted some personal opinions before I do purchase NIS 2005.
