Also I fell I should add that the only reasons I ever do cold boots is because the power went out, I removed a device like the second monitor or my wireless head set receiver to take to work. other than that I don't want to do a cold boot so I leave my PC on for days, weeks even.

Also If i did a cold boot after I removed a device it would crash or freeze or restart and when I hook the devices back up and powered on it would crash or free or restart.
and even if i removed the devices but did not power the PC on till I replaced the devices latter that day it would have the issue.

So why it is not doing it now is really set me off!

Okay, i seem to have found out how this happens. It has something to do with while the power is off and I remove the power cord from the wall out let or the back of the PC or I remove the DVI cable from the back of the PC.

As of know the system is unstable I am in safe mode with networking now.
If I run Launch Startup Repair (Recommended) or I allow the black and white text screen that tries to do a critical CHKDSK? it will fix the issue( not on the first try, usually takes a few attempts) but once windows repairs it its fine and will be fine till I mess with the rear cables.

So the system is unstable and I am performing the safe boot test,
unfortunately the system is unstable, even if I disable all services including the windows services, and all the startup services are disabled as well but the problem still persists.

The steps on line do not say what to do in this scenario.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

I did this, but still the crashing with a blue screen every time so fare
code 0x0000221 not sure of how many zeros in the code.
and its bumping something in the same Blue Screen
and it shows it dumping files, there is a count down it shows
and below the code but above the dump message portion,
it reads windows/system32/ntdll.dll not sure but I know it says ntdll.dll

I'm desperately looking for some clue in your last posts which might give a pointer to the source of the problem - some thoughts below, some of which may be way out, but we're clutching at straws here ....

So, in no specific order ....
    Have you tried switching monitors?
Do you have another power cable to try?

Have you a spare PSU around - would be worth trying that if you have - 300W should be large enough for a test.

What software is loaded apart from Windows?

One question I am bound to ask - are you using a bought retail copy of the Windows 7 DVD?

Have you loaded the Chipset, audio and LAN drivers? You posted that you were running on the onboard graphics for the moment .....

    http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=cf8IZzbU4m6GHKnW&content=download
Which rather suggests that there is no basic issue with the OS.

You've checked the RAM as posted earlier - this leaves only the PSU and the CPU - all other hardware has either been changed or is not currently installed. I would seriously try substituting the PSU - if you don't have one to hand maybe you have a friend who has.

    Fast running out of ideas.

I am seeing a ASUS error message on startup:

    ---------------------------
    AsusSetup
    ---------------------------
    C:\Users\GRINGO~1\AppData\Local\Temp\132544Log.iniis lost
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

I am also having trouble unistalling the ATI Catalyst Control Center 9.7 I get this error when Uninstalling:

    [Window Title]
    C:\Program Files\ATI\CIM\BIN64\InstallManagerApp.exe

    [Content]
    C:\Program Files\ATI\CIM\BIN64\InstallManagerApp.exe

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

    [OK]

Despite the messages I went ahead and down loaded the Athoes LAN Driver, Chip set Driver, and Audio driver from the web link you provided. All installed with out issue
the Chip set driver did change but the Catalyst Control Center is still 9.7 and Couldn't be Uninstalled still.

So I when to ATI/AMD and searched for and update for the driver and to see if a Catalyst Control center was available for integrated/motherboard Graphics, there was so I installed it.
Once the new Catalyst Control Center was installed I was able to use Add/Remove to remove the program with out any error message but I still get the startup error message of:

    ---------------------------
    AsusSetup
    ---------------------------
    C:\Users\GRINGO~1\AppData\Local\Temp\132544Log.iniis lost
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

With the Add-in Card driver gone and the its Catalyst Control center gone I reinstalled the updated chip set driver and Catalyst control for it, the issue had not present I have tried numerous time to provoke it but nothing system cold boots with out issue.

I had yet tried new cables or a different PSU.

So some how there was a conflict with the two video drivers/Control Centers?. I was pretty sure that the chip set drivers where not installed while the Add-in graphics drivers where present. I had never unistalled them be for I installed the add-in graphics because the AMD installer looks for then and uninstalls them be for installing a new set of drivers and Control Center.

I guess I will keeps testing to see if Issue returns while I await your conclusion and see if it is really gone.

    Thanks for you help Grin.

This thread looks to be helpful .....

    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20090831230304296&board_id=1&model=M4A78 PLUS&SLanguage=en-us

ATI drivers can be problematic I believe - a confirmed nVidia user myself :) You may be right and the situation now needs to be monitored.

There are several options for the graphics - onboard and PCIe in the BIOS - Manual page 3.21 which I do not fully understand.

The test will come when you reinstall the graphics card - while you have stability I would pass on cables/PSU.

I have replaced the PSU with a know good one, problem still present.
I I swapped monitors and cables that seemed like it the answer but it 2 crashed,
I even swapped the cables on the monitors ( monitor 1 cable on monitor 2 and monitor 2 cables on Monitor 1) no change. so basically the 2 monitors did not fix the issue even when I tried new cable on them, even one monitor at a time.

since playing around with the monitors and the cables a new startup error occurs:

    [Window Title]
    Recycle Bin

    [Content]
The Recycle Bin on C:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?

    [Yes] [No]

And Internet Explorer isn't working I have to use Mozilla. IE short cuts do nothing.

You have that many errors that I am thinking that a further clean step by step install may be the best way to go, but first ......

On what basis did you select the memory? Did you use G-Skill's memory selector to determine which memory was compatible with the mobo? ......

    http://www.gskill.com/configurator.php

    http://www.gskill.com/configurator2.php?pid=2&model=372

Are your modules on the list?

The hard drive that you fitted as replacement - was this a new or used drive?

On the basis that it is still a WD have you checked out the drive with WD's disk diagnostic software? ....

    Western Digital

If the drive checks out OK and you are completely satisfied that the memory is compatible then I would suggest a clean install with extensive testing at each subsequent stage of installing software .....

Clean install Windows with full format - remain disconnected from the internet and test. I assume your OEM DVD is not tied to a specific manufacturer - HP, Gateway, ...., but is a 'general' OEM ?

Install antivirus software - I would advise installing Microsoft Security Essentials rather than AVG and do not install Spybot S&D - it is past it's sell by date and MSE provides the same antispyware protection. - we need to establish if software is the cause of the problem.

Connect to the internet and update Windows - test.

Install your other software items one by one, testing extensively between each installation.

If, after that exercise, the system is still unstable I have no further thoughts.

I selected the memory based on it specs and price. No, I did not use the G-Skill memory selector to help my purchase. Yes, my memory modules are on the list, they are on the ASUS list of recommended ram as well, and I have confirmed my ram configuration is accepted by my motherboard.

The replacement was a new Hard Drive provided under warranty, I have used the link you gave to diag the drive, which passes both tests used buy the software.

My windows copy is a "general" OEM copy. I will go ahead with the steps you recommend.

Would my CPU be the suspect by the process of elimination? how do I test for errors with the CPU?

There is stress testing software available for CPU's - Prime95 is one of the most popular.

The 64 bit version can be downloaded here ....

    http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205

I have no experience of stress testing software, but I would give it a go seeing that every other component has been checked out.

The nature of the problem has changed now? It boots into Windows, but becomes unstable there?

If you are switching monitors when the system is running, the ATI manager doesn't like that, it relies on setting the monitor at startup.

Do you think changing the version of the ATI (Catalyst) software has caused the change? Did you uninstall the old version before installing the new one?
I would uninstall everything, because it is a different graphics adapter. Yes, as Pete said, they can be a real pain in the A when they they are not working correctly. You are working with two similar versions, that can cause big problems. Me, I would go to the Startup Options menu (F8 at startup) and select VGA Mode, then run the uninstallers.

Mmmm, I was just thinking that the onboard graphics will share system memory with Windows. Those error messages we generally associate with memory problems.

I can't remember if you said you were able to clear the CMOS.

Personally, if I wanted to run quite a large amount of RAM and a good graphics adapter, I would choose a motherboard without onboard graphics.

The system is still crashing even with out the OS. While I was installing the OS the system crashed, and now there is no OS system. System crashes when loading windows from disk, I just get a blank black screen, and some times windows load from disk and I begin the install but it will crash. When it crashes it some time stays on the Blue Screen or it will just flash the Blue Screen and than restart.

I have cleared the bios as well.

I am thinking of contacting ASUS or G-Skill to see if it is the memory configuration, perhaps I need to lower its speed or adjust its timing. running all 4 slots with 2GB of ram may be the issue.

I was kind of expecting that you were testing with a lower quantity of RAM. Yes, take out two modules and try again (and swap them if it still happens).

Just an aside. I have an Abit mobo. I started with 2 X 512MB modules. I bought two modules of 1GB (same manufacturer) and added them in. After a while the system started playing up. I am now running the 2 X 1GB and it seems stable. Maybe one or both of the 512MB modules "went bad" (or got overheated or something).

I think I said it before, you need to get it stable. Swapping out those modules is something you need to try.

I also run G-Skill in one of my machines and I always increase the Voltage by 0.1V it seems to make a system more stable. It will increase the temps a little bit but with the heat spreaders and good case cooling I have had no problems with overheating.

Unfortunately no change I can run with just 1 2GB stick or 2 2GB sticks and same thing. I have tried one stick at a time and same results I had try each pack separately first be for trying 1 stick at a time I have been testing with memtest all is well, i had done this be for as well and I had some bad ram.
I replaced it under warranty and the ram appears to fine.

G-Skills forums show that several other like me with my same board and memory have had this issue, it seems with a little instruction from there forums guys they can seem to configure the ram setting in the bios to get it stable, but I have to wait till I can post on their forums.
