I'm thinking of doing a System Restore to a point before I installed a wireless modem router for broadband.

Windows XP Home Edition Version 2000. SP.3

Would I have to instal the wireless modem again ?

    Thanks for any help.

Hi Speke. Normally if you do a system restore then yes you will have to reinstall the wireless modem again. Instead of doing a system restore why not just uninstall the program.

Thanks for quick reply Evan Omo.

The reason why I was thinking about doing a system restore, was the computer is pretty slow firing up - a lot slower than it was before getting on broadband with the wireless modem - so it was just an idea. It's possibly something else making it slow?

I've defragmented, and turned off several Start Up items, but it's still pretty slow.

I may just live with it. Thanks anyway.

No Problem. How much RAM does the computer have? I would try adding more RAM to the system as that can significantly improve system performance. As another way of increasing performance you can try disabling Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.

Thanks very much for reply Evan Omo and details of all the "Services ".

If you think it's the lack of RAM, it might be easier to get more!! But I will go through all the information as well, thank you.

    System Info:
    HP Compaq
    AMD SEMPRON PROCESSOR 3400+
    1.80 ghZ
    704mb RAM

The slow booting up only appeared after getting onto broadband after dialup and using an ADSL wireless modem/router.

Thanks again, and yes... it's time I had a new computer.

    Thanks again for reply

Yes, I'm running Windows Firewall. and Avasti anti -virus

    I've Ad-Aware, and SuperantiSpyware installed.

There was a previous post a while ago about slow starting up, but it didn't seem to be resolved.

I would try going to Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstalling any programs that you don't need. Also download and run ATF Cleaner and Auslogics Disk Defrag. After running those 2 programs reboot the computer and see if you notice any speed increase in your system.

You'll have to check with Task Manager & see which processes are running & which are taxing your CPU.

    Thanks Arie and Evan Omo

I did the defrag. with Auslogics DiscDefrag (though I have done the Windows Defrag.) I also used ATF Cleaner (I have been using cseraser) - thanks for the tips. I do believe it is a wee bit quicker on firing up.

The Task Manager shows the CPU usage is mainly my Avasti , my browser, and Svchost.exe. On checking this latter, I'm none the wiser as to whether it's advisable to disable.

However, with the improvement as noted above, I am quite happy and thanks again for all the advice.:)

You can't disable Svchost.exe. Read this for some background information: A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP Professional Edition
