I just realized that I was looking at the Task Scheduler instead of the Task Manager.

In the Task Manager I cannot find System Restore running. Please tell me what it looks like in Task Manager under Processes.

In my Services.msc the System Restore is set to automatic and is started.

In the System Configeration Utilility under Services the System Restore Service is checked and running.

    I have good news.

My System Restore Service just set it's first System Checkpoint automatically. It set the checkpoint about 24 hours after I stopped the scanner monitor program from running all the time.

MS says that the System Restore Service looks for a idle time to set the checkpoint so as to not set it in the middle of a running owner's program.

Anyone having this same problem should look for an installed program in the startup list that would prevent System Restore from seeing the system as idle.

Thanks to MiniB for pointing me to the article which included this information.

I conflated Task Scheduler Service with Task Manager. I meant Task Scheduler Service. As you know by now, SR will not show up under Task Manager jobs. Sorry for not answering before.

Could you let us know what monitoring process you were running that pervented auto RP's? Your description can apply to AV's for instance, so it seems that it depends on how "intrusive" the monitoring is.

The software that was running is a program that monitors my Visioneer scanner so that the buttons will be recognized when they are pushed. These buttons are 'copy' 'scan' etc. The program is called 'One Touch Monitor'.

I do not use the scanner very much so I will start the program when I need it and it will run until next restart. I unchecked it in the startup list. I do shut my computer down at night so I should get my System Restore Checkpoints on a regular basis.

I have another problem on this matter. When I start my 'One Touch Monitor" program it puts itself back in the startup list in System Configuration Utility. This means that I must go in and uncheck it each time I use my scanner or I will not get my System Restore Points set automatically.

I have tried to contact Visioneer about this and they want $2.00 per minute just to talk to them. I have a Visioneer 8100 scanner, however I am not likely to buy another Visioneer product because of the way they handle their support.

Can someone tell me what I can do to prevent the 'One Touch' program from being added to the startup list when I start the program to use my scanner?

    Hi Daniel,

Did you check to see if there is an option in the program to disable startup by right clicking the tray icon and looking for something like "preferences" or "options "?

If not, try Mike Lin's Startupmonitor to keep it from starting up http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml

I have not been able to find an option to disable startup anywhere in this program. I will try the StartupMonitor.

    Thanks

    Now I have bad news

My system restore has not set another restore point automatically since that one on March 24 that I mentioned in an earlier post.

I have tried shutting down other running programs such as HP Printscreen and StartupMonitor, but still no restore points being set. It will set a restore point if I install or uninstall something. I only have 5 items left in my startup list in System Configuration Utility and all of these are required. In services the only things running are the necessary items for the proper operation of my computer.

So, my previous solution to this problem did not work except for setting that one restore point. I have no idea why it set that one.

Anyone with any other ideas, please post them.

I believe that I have this thing figured out now.

It seems that I had two programs running that was preventing automatic system checkpoints being set.

One is the scanner monitoring program that I mentioned earlier and the other one is an HP program that has to do with my HP Deskjet 842C printer. It appears that it is a monitoring program for HP printers that monitors the printer for such things as ink levels. My 842C printer does not have the ink level monitoring, so I do not need this program running as far as I can tell at this time.

With these two programs not running I got a System Checkpoint this morning. I did not have these two programs running the last time I got a checkpoint set on March 24. I did not realize that the printer monitoring program had been shut down at that time, but I found that part of my printer software had to be reinstalled and this restarted the monitoring program.

I will watch this a few days and see if the problem is solved this time.

If it hasn't been mentioned, this one-touch restore point creator program is pretty useful. I have mine set to make a point every 6 hours (in Task Scheduler).

It doesn't solve the problem of SR's own restore points, but it may work even when SR doesn't believe the machine to be "idle ".

I just love these freebie utilities you keep pointing me to! I don't have any problems with SR, but now I have a tool to help people who are not getting regular Restore Points. THANK YOU!!

Had a hard time finding that one. Even though I knew it was there. Those sites make me like, well, me in a candy store.

Cookies? :D Ummmm! I just happen to be on my 5th cup of coffee.

That SR thing is good to keep around. Some day when you are musing that your machine just seems to be purring for reasons unknown, click it and save for posterity.

Scroll to and read the troubleshooting section for "System Restore ":

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/faqsrwxp.mspx

The section mentioning the inclusion of a drive and I assume partition that, at any point in time drops down to a point where it will only have 50mg of freespace, will cause system restore to lay dorment or stop setting restore points until a time when more free space has been detected.

Snippet CutNpaste (cause I found this a real interesting gotcha')

Why are my System Restore restore points missing or deleted?

Answer: One of the common reasons for this is when you run out of free disk space on the system drive or on any of the available non-system drives being monitored by System Restore, and so System Restore starts purging restore points consistently across all monitored partitions to free disk space . If the free disk space falls below 50MB on any monitored partition, System Restore stops monitoring your system and suspends. This causes System Restore to purge all restore points in an attempt to free up the remaining disk space. However, you should have already received a warning about running low in disk space prior to this unless you've disabled this feature. To better understand this issue and for other possible causes please visit the following URL: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;301224.

    Auto System Restore point

    Hiya,

The following script creates a restore point, you could copy it to your startup folder to create a restore point every time you boot. Note: if this script creates an error check that each line of code is on the same line i.e. not broken with a carriage return halfway.

    - Simon

    Instructions :

Copy the below lines of code into a Notepad file and save the file with a VBS extension. Double click the VB Script file to execute it. If you have trouble with the above code, the VB Script file is available for download from www.dougknox.com in the Win XP Fixes section.

    'Unattended System Restore Point
    'sysrestorepoint.vbs
    ' Doug Knox - rev 02/11/2002
'This code may be freely distributed/modified
    'Downloaded from www.dougknox.com
'Extracted from original code by Bill James - www.billsway.com

    Set sr = getobject( "winmgmts:\\.\root\default:Systemrestore ")

msg = "New Restore Point successfully created." & vbCR
msg = msg & "It is listed as: " & vbCR
    msg = msg & "Automatic Restore Point " & Date & " " & Time

'Put a in front of the next five lines to disable the Success Failed Prompt

    If (sr.createrestorepoint( "Automatic Restore Point ", 0, 100)) = 0 Then
    MsgBox msg
    Else
MsgBox "Restore Point creation Failed! "
    End If

'Remove the ' from these lines to only alert you if the process failed
    'If (sr.createrestorepoint( "Automatic Restore Point ", 0, 100)) = 0 Then
'MsgBox "Restore Point creation Failed! "
    'End If

    Set sr = Nothing

I have decide to go to a clean install of XP PRO in my machine. I believe this will solve several issues with XP HOME installed by HP.

For the benefit of those following this thread I will bring you up to date with my findings. I have not been able to determine exactly what is preventing the automatic restore points being set. It seems that if I change something relating to System Restore, I will get a restore point set shortly thereafter. However, it will not set another one until I do somethign else. I have not found a pattern to come to a conclusion. I do believe it is something done by HP that has caused this situation, but to be fair to HP I have not proved this.

I have changed the restore point interval to one hour and it has made no real difference.

I am not one to give up easily on anything and if this were the only issue I would use another method to get my restore points rather than going to XP PRO.

Thanks to all for helping me try to solve this problem.

Did your HP come with a real XP Home disk?

Did you ever try a SFC on this machine? Maybe something that simple would fix SR???
Start > Run > cmd sfc /scannow and have your XP install disk ready.

I thought the Doug Knox tweak was a very good suggestion, but yours is a solution, not a workaround. I hope you like XP Pro. I've been using it for a little over two years, and I'm very satisfied.

Start a new thread if you have any questions about your Pro install, and post back on this one if SR still fails to work properly after the new OS is going. I don't need to tell you, I'm sure, but for the benefit of anyone reading this thread- back up back up back up.
