    Hello,

I guess I should start with the basics. I am using a 3 year old Gateway desktop running XP. I haven’t had any problems with it before. I am pretty sure I didn’t have any virus problems when this started because my virus scan had been run the evening before I started having the problem. I don’t know what other specifics you need about the computer so if you need a particular piece of information just let me know what it is and I will find out.

About a week ago, my mouse stopped moving and the whole computer froze so I had to turn my computer off with the power switch. I changed out my wireless mouse (I thought it was the batteries in the mouse) for the one that came with the computer and restarted the computer. Everything seemed to be fine; I switched the mouse settings back to basic optical mouse etc in the control panel. After about 10 minutes I get a BSOD with a Machine Check Exception error telling me to check my hardware. I checked all the drivers to my hardware for updates and it’s plugged in and everything; it’s just a USB plug. Since then, every time I actually get the computer started, after about 4 minutes it freezes up and I have to turn it off. It only restarts every 3rd or 4th time the rest of the time I just get the BSOD.
I googled the error codes and according to some other sites, it’s either that computer is dirty and needs to be cleaned or my hard drive is bad. So I cleaned the inside with compressed air and got nothing. I was then told it could be that there is some problem with my files for system startup and to run the recovery disk. I put the disk in and I was finally able to get it to run past the splash screen and in to the BOOT menu. The first time the disk ran it copied a bunch of files, to the recovery drive on my computer and then started then asked me if I wanted to run a full recovery or a partial recovery. I started the partial recovery and at 22% it froze and I had to turn it off. I have tried this 3 times and it goes to different points but still freezes before it finishes. Now I can’t even attempt to start the computer normally because there are files missing for startup. I am not opposed to running the full, destructive recovery but wanted to avoid it if possible. Any suggestions on how to make the recovery run all the way through?
