It sounds like you have nailed the problem - overheating of the CPU.

If you have not done so take the side off the case and check the condition of the CPU fan - it may be very dusty, - clean it or it may be failing and running too slow to be totally effective.

You can check out the CPU temp and fan speed (should be in the region of 3500 rpm) using Everest and monitor the CPU temperature during a scan.

With the case open direct a fan into it and run one of the scans which causes the thermal shutdown and see if there is any improvement.

Check out the case fans - are they running? are they clean?

    Hi Pete,
    Using Everest\Motherboard\CPUID\Power Management Features\Thermal Monitor 1
is the only temperature feature supported that I find. All other "temperature" items
    are marked as "not supportedâ€.

Not sure how to use Everest for what you suggest.

Have not opened the case yet, but will do so.
This is a laptop so will open the bottom.

    Thanks,
    Gary

Hmm - laptops often do not have the sensors that a desktop motherboard has - and yours clearly hasn't.

I rather assumed a desktop - maybe I missed mention of it in your thread.

Do you know that the CPU cooling fan is working - you should hear it clearly when the laptop is under load. If you can't then the fan may have failed - which would explain the thermal cutout. May be possible to see it with a flashlight shone through the cooling grids.

Generally (?) the fan spins up on boot and then stops until enough load is put on the CPU to cause it to run again as the temperature rises.

Yes, the fan is running and seems to be two speed, kicking into high gear
once in awhile. The case gets hot around where I assume the power
supply is located(as it is in line with the power conneciton). Computer has ventilation ,sitting on props approx. 2 inches above the table.
Not that this seems to matter.

I posted the computer info in one of the original posts, so easy to overlook,
    I am sure.

    Sudden Shutdown Black Screen-Resolved !

    Hi,
FINALLY got this problem figured out and fixed-or so it would appear.

Thermal Shutdown appears to have been the problem-especially with
this notebook-Fujitsu N3010 which has a known history for this.

Compressed Air has corrected the problem and I am using Mobile Meter
to monitor the temps. Noticable difference right away.
Successfully ran Norton Full Virus Scan and Spybot S&D.
Watched temps previously rise to 83,85,87 C. and Thermal Shutdown.
After applying compressed air, max temp has been 74 C during virus
scan, but mostly mid 60's as fans are working more efficiently now.

    Also, see http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/129/42/
for instructions on opening the N3010 and applying thermal compound
    if necessary.

Thanks for all your help !
I have recommended this site to many !

    Gary
