Substituting a HT processor for a non-HT processor might affect installed software

I checked TaskManager for anything that was not normal but everything was OK. The "Performance Tab" displayed a split window for CPU usage which is normal for a HT processor. I didn't think of reinstalling the chip set drivers but I doubt it would make any difference. I believe HT/non-HT is in BIOS alone and chipset drivers are the same.

The fact that NIS 2005 handled Internet Explorer OK but not the E-mail clients (MW and OE) is confusing but is, on a second thought, logical ... ... bearing in mind that other applications changed behaviour as well. I believe that applications designed with HT or dual core in mind will have a problem but older applications which know nothing about HT or DC will be unaffected. Newer applications install differently depending on HT/DC or not.

As a side note, there was a significant performance hit when disabling HT ... ... for the stuff that was working, that is.

I was actually reluctant to recommend a reinstall until I found out the reason for the behaviour. I thought - restoring a Ghost Image is under normal conditions (no hardware changes) equivalent to a reinstall but it wasn't in this case. Now, I'm convinced that a reinstallation with HT enabled will be successful and that previous Ghost Images are useless.

    Hi Christer

As a long time AMD user and currently using an AMD 64 on my desktop which I recall has 'Hypertransport' - not the same as Hyperthreading as only one processor is identified in Device Manager. However it requires an AMD, not generic, driver to function.

IMO updating the chipset drivers - or more likely the CPU driver has a good chance of allowing hyperthreading to work. The hyperthreading driver should be on the mobo CD.

BTW agree with your suggestion of moving this thread with title edit to Hardware. Go to it :D

Does celeron has HT? Its already brain damaged :D .

I use AMD exclusively & had no problems upgrading the CPU.

That shouldn't give any trouble since they are basically of the same architechture.

However, I assume that there will be trouble if someone buys a dual core compatible motherboard but a single core processor to start with and at a later date upgrades to a dual core processor.

That's why it pays to have a stable architecture & not change it just for the heck of it.

Regarding dual core processors, every single 939 motherboard out there supports dual core cpus - you just have to upgrade the BIOS. Simple.
