No change, its just the same as before.

    Hi Clif,

This makes me wonder, again, if it might be a "Gateway thing ". You have installed a full (standard) version of Windows. Are you certain that this is OK by Gateway and that they do not expect their users to be running their own "restore" version of Windows? OEM manufacturers run "cut down" versions of standard BIOSes so that you are forced to buy their OS versions. AND/OR...the cut-down BIOS versions do not support all types of hardware, so your drives may be functioning, but only just.

I can't remember exactly how long ago you got this system. If it is still under warranty I think I would start an email contact with their support, describe the situation and see if they could solve it...or replace it.

    To late.
Support has run out and i didnt go for the 200.00 extended support contract.

The first (re-) install of XP i did using their OEM cd's. It did nothing to correct
    the throughput problem.

I understand that as a HD becomes more populated, the speed will decrease
but i havent added that much more to it. Most of the newer stuff was for
replacing older programs due to updates or new equipment.

Think i'll try moving everything possible on to a different HD, minimizing the C:
drive and then check the speed.

Another forum (hardwareanalysis) has quite a few postings about SATA.
Seems like i'm not the only one "in the dark" about SATA problems....
