Hey, hope someone has an answer for me...

Whenever I load new software on my computer, and I need to restart my computer, when I do so, it loads, hits a black screen, then nadda. I then have to power down my computer, repeat, and still, black screen. Eventually, my computer asks me to do a start up check, which can not find any problems, but then tells me I have to do a system restore, which I do, and of course the software I loaded is not on anymore. So, basically, I can not install any new apps on my computer because this always happens, not once has it worked. I need help...

Most likely there is a conflict with the software (but it's possible that outdated drivers could impact this.

Vista has several reasons for black screens:
    - hard drive issues (hardware or boot options)
    - video driver issues
    - other driver issues
    - registry issues

Please let us know which program(s) cause this and we can make some recommendations on which drivers to update (also ensure that Windows is up to date).

Thanks for getting back to me, but it happens no matter what. Anytime I install a new program, it asks me to restart my computer. When I do so, that's when I get the black screen..then have to do a system restore...hence, making it so the program I just put on not on my computer anymore because it restores the computer back to when It wasn't on there in the first place. Any program I install...it happens.

1 - Check your hard drive with a diagnostic available from the hard drive manufacturer
2 - Run CHKDSK /R , BOOTREC /FIXMBR , and BOOTREC /FIXBOOT from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
3 - Run Startup Repair from the Installation DVD
4 - Download the latest video drivers for your system from the graphics card chipset manufacturer (ATI, nVidia, Intel, etc). Uninstall your current video drivers, then install the new one's

I had a computer (motherboard actually) that would do what sounded like the same thing.

When the install has finished and it says it must restart, it should offer to allow you restart later. Choose to restart later, then do a shutdown, not a restart. That should overcome the blank screen.

I traced my problem to the BIOS, I did shutdowns for a long time, but eventually I did a BIOS upgrade that fixed it.

    Matt,

Thank you so much. You were right, a shutdown worked. Now, how does one update the BIOS?
