    Hi Rebecca,

Aw heck, guys, and here I was thinking I almost had things under control!
    You're past the hard part!

The driver stuff will probably be easy, but at this point you should use Dell just in case there is something tricky.

    Regards - Charles

Going to start a new thread after this, because I'm going to be moving into a new topic - that of how to make all my data "default" to my new D: drive.
But for the sake of completeness, I did call Dell - was instructed to put the Drivers and Utilities cd into the computer, and had to go through an installation wizard for the Dell Resource CD. Then a screen titled "search criteria" opened up, showing:
    System Model: Dimension 5100
    OS: Windows XP Home
    Topic: My system

Was told to click on topic and change it from "my system" to "drivers ".
Then, one by one (rebooting after each), I installed drivers for the following:
    controller
    video
    audio
    network
    modem

I was told the modem driver was on a separate disk, which I did not receive. I got bored waiting for the poor tech support guy to find a part number for the disk so that it could be sent to me, so I played around with the same Drivers and Utilities cd I'd been using all along, and under modem, one of two entries had a blue checkmark in front of it. So I went ahead and clicked on it, something installed itself and now there aren't any more yellow question marks under Device Manager - so I think the modem driver must've been there after all.
That's all I can do for today. Need a sanity break before tackling part 2 of this challenge!
Thanks again for all the help!

Good news, Rebecca ...... :) ...... it will not be long before You Yourself will be helping people who are in similar situations!

When You start the new thread, I'll copy my hints on moving folders from this one and also add the "condensed instructions on Firefox and Thunderbird ". I reread the FF/TB thread and as usual, Yours Truly made things more complicated than necessary. If You accept (which I didn't) default folders on C: that will never be used, it is easy to create new ones in a different location, such as D:\Rebecca\Firefox and D:\Rebecca\Thunderbird. More on that later.

    Rebecca,
one final piece of feedback in this thread:

Did the use of DELPART get rid of the multiboot screen during POST (Power On Self Test)?

    Thanks,
    Christer

YES! It did - I'm sorry I neglected to acknowledge that fact at the time.

Well, You had a lot on Your mind yesterday!

I've got a teflon coated memory ...... :( ...... I was almost sure that DELPART would get rid of all traces of any previous operating system but I wasn't 100 % sure. Now, I am ...... ...... for as long as I can remember it!
