    I have a Server2003 system, 32-bit, using SP2. WindowsUpdate had worked ok in the past, but the first time we've run it since late-sept, yields errors. I compared a working system, to the system that's broken, and the part of windowsupdate.log that differs, is as follows:

    I've done lots of searching on the Internet, and lots of people have this problem, and 4-5 fixes are always indicated, all of which I've tried:

    1.) Refreshing proxy config using proxycfg

    2.) delete/rename of c:\windows\system32\softwaredistribution\

    3.) use the French version of the URL (using 'fr' rather than 'en' in the URL)

    4.) Bouncing WindowsUpdate Service as well as BITS, and re-registering some DLLs, the rebooting

    5.) Following websites are in IE's Trusted-Zone:
    download.windowsupdate.com
    ds.download.windowsupdwate.com
    update.microsoft.com
    www.update.microsoft.com
    schemas.microsoft.com
    stats1.update.microsoft.com

    Something new: The 'latest' version of Windows Update said that it's now set to only trust content that is signed by a new certificate. --If I'm missing a root-cert update, or other cert update, do you think this is the issue? Also, the 'SoftwareDistribution' directory is not automatically re-creating, now that I renamed it.

    Any other ideas? Thanks!

    Please do the following:

    • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter.
    • Next type cat /dev/null > %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log then press Enter (ignore the error that 'cat' isn't recognized... it still does what it is supposed to do).
    • Lastly type net start wuauserv, then press Enter
    • Now repeat the action that normally leads to the Windows Update error.
    • Once completed copy/paste the contents of the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log file in your next post (at minimum 50-75 lines).


    If you want to keep a backup of your current WindowsUpdate.log file you can make a copy from the command prompt. Enter copy %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log.old

    Arie -- thanks! --This is an important system at work actually, and they won't let me run anything they think is 'smoke-and-mirrors' --the security people (and me), want to know what the 'fix-it' tool is doing up front, so we get the warm-n-fuzzy. We don't want to run anything where we can't see / don't know what it's doing in the background...

    Sorry -- I should have thought logically -- I can't break anything anymore than it is now.. So I ran it anyway... "Troubleshooting cannot continue" -- "Cannot contact the Server" Error Code=80072F8F

    The system proxy is set, and the proxy settings inside user 'joe' (let's say that's the username I was logged in as) are properly set. Now... The proxy I'm talking to, allows only 'business-related' sites, filtered by URL (like *.microsoft.com) etc etc.... Proxy is working, because IE can browse to these business-related sites just fine. The proxy won't be allowing facebook.com or "abc.troubleshoot-me.com "

    --This is why it's a good thing to run the checks manually, because I don't know that that fix-me app is trying to do....

    Yea, right now I don't have any thing to add, the error you get is a HTTP 404 error.

    If it means anything, we have some Server2008 machines that can use the same proxy & successfully do WindowsUpdate. I was contemplating moving the contents of c:\windows\system32\softwaredistribution\ on my windows XP machine, into the same location on the malfunctioning server2003. Ever since renaming that SoftwareDistribution directory, it has not re-appeared / been re-created. I actually have a guy at work who oversees some server2003 systems, and I can ask him if his WindowsUpdate on those systems is functioning. (his systems would use the same proxy as my broken system..)

    I replaced the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution directory with one that was on my WinXP system, where WindowsUpdate is actually working. --Same error. I still need to get ahold of a logfile from a srvr 2003 system where WindowsUpdate is running, for an apples-to-apples comparison.

    I don't expect a SoftwareDistribution folder from XP to work on a 2003 server.

    Disable your firewall& se if that works (don't forget the Windows Firewall).

    You could also try: How do I reset Windows Update components?

    The link given in post #11 has alot more items in it to try, than other fixes I saw on the Internet, I'll give it a try. Otherwise, article 949104 doesn't have any info in it, about downloading & installing the newest Windows Update client... All it tells users, is how to punch WindowsUpdate thru a proxy. It's the chicken-or-the-egg.... I can't download the WindowsUpdate client using WindowsUpdate, because WindowsUpdate is broken. I was hoping for an EXE or an MSI that I could execute locally....

    Y'all are going to whip me... It turns out that all other Windows hosts that needed to run Windows Update, were moved to a different proxy about 2 months back, and they all started working fine. Apparently the problem does center around the particular proxy I'm using. I'll be switching to this new proxy within the next 10 days or so. Routing 'direct' to the Internet is not an option, I must use a proxy. SUch is life working in a large enterprise; -- this info just didn't reach me for 2 months!
