    Arie,
The services are correct now but were not during the upgrade process. I don't think the SP put them back to where they defaut to because I did have to change some of them after the upgrade to get them all to their default. So you may be on the right track and they need to be all set to default before the SP is installed. I can try that if nothing else works since I have a current backup to restore to.

    Thanks

Well I restored my system then set all the services to default then tryed to install SP2 again. This time it still deleted my dialup shortcut but then before I checked anything else it wanted to reboot so I did. System file corrupt .. Wouldn't boot back up and wanted the cd to do a repair. Since I haven't created the cd yet I just restored my system using the backup. I'm going to try it again in a little while but am not convinced I will be able to get this update installed without doing a complete system reinstall from scratch using the cd with SP2 slipstreamed which I'm not ready to do yet.

Well I did a complete system restore from an image I made before installing SP2 then checked all services and made sure they were running and set to their defaults. Then I ran SP2 again and it's doing the same thing it was before. Here's what I got.

    1) My dialup connection is gone from Contol Panel - Network Connections? It is also not in Outlook Express. I had a shortcut to it in the quick links toolbar but that has been removed also. However the settings are saved in Internet Explorer - options - connections? I would like my shortcut back since I don't use Internet Explorer. It won't let me create one in the control panel. It starts to walk me thru the setup but I only get as far as selecting "I want to setup my connection manually" then it just dissappears?

    2) The firewall said it was active and OK on startup but then disabled itself somehow? When I try and enable it I get the error " Windows cannot start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service ". The Network Connections service was running before the update but now it will not start.

    3) Network Connections does not want to open. It takes a few min. then it finally shows no connections.

Rockit I like the way you are analyzing this in an orderly way, and the kicker is that you're savvy enough to use your backup, no matter what results the SP2 brings on, so you can keep investigating from a consistent set of conditions.

If XP isn't locating Network Connections, and the LAN should be the default, unless you tell it otherwise, then it is logical that the shortcuts aren't there. We can make those later- what is wrong, I think, is that XP is losing NC just like it does occasionally in a repair. Try deleting every network connection from the Control Panel, and then recreating them.

I appreciate the time you are taking to share this with us. Hope this helps.

    XP sp2 update toasted me

I run a multiboot system with 2K on drive C and XPsp1 on drive E. Running the straight 266 Mb sp2 update file seemed to install OK on drive E but upon reboot, my drive E partition dissapeared from Windows. E and all the new files could still be seen, though, with '98 DOS (Fat 32 partition, of course). Even my win2K 'normal' boot acted squirelly. I was glad I ghosted the system before trying and I quickly reimaged it.
Then I slipstreamed the sp2 into a full install CD, and tried both a fresh install and an 'inplace update'. Both install try's worked fine for my drive E XP partition.
    Don't know why, but .....
    Good Luck

Amazing !! I think I've got a working system with sp2 installed. I had to apply the update then go through a complete windows setup using the repair option on my new Winxp Pro SP2 slipstreamed CD. Everything seems to be intact and all my program's and settings were not changed that I can tell so far. The firewall and network settings are now working. Norton just finished downloading a update and I now have all green lights in the security center!!

    YaHoo

Thanks for all the help and words of encoragement

When i initially installed SP2 it was slow trying to load everything and IE and the scrolling was so slow it would have been quicker to see paint dry. On some occasions it didnt load everything and was on 100% usage.

Problem Solved: It was ATI drivers (latest from the connect3d site) that was the cause. I removed those drivers and installed the previous version, after restarting everything was smooth and running properly.

I dont know if this is part of your problem, if not, then anyone out there using the latest ATI drivers, and have the same problem as i did, then you now know what to do.

After some testing it seems that sp2 and the system repair that I had to do has left some programs not functional. TrueImage now cannot find any hard drives and Diskeeper has been replaced with Windows disk defragmenter. I reinstalled Diskeeper and it seems to be OK but TrueImage is still not working after a uninstall and reinstall attempt.

I lost both of those, too. Diskeeper reverts to XP defrag after any repair, and TruImage can't find drives after a repair or some reg cleaners.

TrueImage needs to be uninstalled, rebooted to remove drivers, reinstalled, and rebooted again.
