    Well buddy, that was the fastest it's ever shut down. Iwent back and timed my video. I had some apps running at the time and it took just over 47 seconds. With nothing running, it was 43. With the instant shutdown shortcut, it's 23. Now does that give any indication of what's wrong?

    I think it could just be the fact that the shutdown shortcut just force closes all applications immediately whereas the regular shutdown process doesn't force close all running programs for a few seconds so that is why there is a discrepancy in the shutdown times.

    The point is, if the shutdown shortcut solves the issue then why not just use the new shortcut to shut down the machine? Its faster than having to shutdown Windows 7 using the traditional method anyway.

    Let me also ask, did this slow shutdown issue happen immediately after you finished the clean install of Windows 7 or did you install a security program and then the computer started having a slow shutdown?

    In a word, No. It did it from the very start. Now remember, it also has that 21 second black screen from the Windows logon screen until Windows desktop. It done both of them from the time it was installed...on two different installations. (I tried out Win 8.1 briefly) other than these glitches, the system runs perfectly. It just baffles me as to why the start and shut down problem, but otherwise runs fine.

    What is the specific model of the laptop? There are multiple HP Pavilion DV6400 models.

    Product number and serial number are located on the bottom of the machine if manufactured before the middle of 2010. after that it's located in the battery compartment. You can also access it by pressing the fn+esc keys. Other places it is located in are HP Support Assistant, and HP Advisor Dashboard.

    You need to use the process of elimination next.

    Go into msconfig, disable everything under the Startup tab and then time long it takes to shutdown.

    Go back into msconfig, enable the top three items under the Startup tab and then time how long it takes to shutdown.

    If the shutdown was signficantly slower this time, it must have been one of those first three programs you just re-enabled. So, disable all but one of those and time the shutdown. If the same, it wasn't that re-enabled program. Disable it, and re-enable one of the other two and time the shutdown.

    You get the idea. Keep testing until you find the one (or more) that are slowing your shutdown time.

    @ Evan
    System Model HP Pavilion dv6000 (RX945AV)(DV6400cto)
    @lj50
    Thanks for that little tip
    @SpywareDr
    Thanks, I'm going to do this, but although the shortest start up and shut down time is desirable, my issue is the behavior, not the time.

    The HP Pavilion dv6400 CTO Notebook PC Drivers does not have Windows 7 drivers available for the laptop which could be part of the reason why you are experiencing strange behavior with it starting up and shutting down. Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version?

    Not yet, but I'll do it today. I can't find the link now, but I followed an HP techs advice on installing Win 7. He said use the Vista drivers. You think the XP drivers might work better?

    No, the XP drivers are not compatible with Windows 7. Using Windows Vista drivers is not ideal but if that is all you have then there isn't much you can do. There might be a few unintended side effects with using drivers not designed for Windows 7.

    Glad the tip helped. I have an HP Pavilion dv6t SE CTO 3000 with windows 7 ultimate 64bit. I could post the link to my drivers. The only thing is I have an Intel i5 cpu.
