    Hi Tric

    Uh oh!

If you have never dealt with BIOS you need to be very careful.

But to get to BIOS all computers/Bois have a key to hit immediately after power on.

Most are the DEL key some F1 some F2 etc. Normally it tells you on the screen but if the logo comes on hit esc to clear it.

Tric I am away from home on business do not have but a moment.

If you get into BIOS make absolutly positive you change nothing that you can not put back. This is one place to make your computer not boot at all.

    Hi Tric

This looks OK! So we should not have to bother it.

goto control panel / power options / apm

then click enable advance power management support

May not work when you shut down this time but next time let us hope!

    Let me know.

    Try this Tric

    Step 1
Click Start - Settings - Control Panel - double click the Systems icon.

    Click the Device Manager tab

Click the + next to System if the first device is not Advanced Power Management support skip to Step 2.

If Advanced Power Management support is present highlight and click the Remove button to remove it from Device Manager. Once removed reboot the computer and let it reinstall and try power management again.

    Step 2
If Advanced Power Management was not listed in Device Manager or once removed was not reinstalled after rebooting the computer click

Start - Settings - Control Panel

Double click on Add new hardware, and let Windows detect and install new hardware (should detect and install Advanced Power Management support).

    Let me know!

    Mike

Your BIOS seems to be correct as far as Power management.

I can't remember if we did this before but now that the device is installed even tho not working, lets refresh the entire XP install!

So put win XP CD in CD drive and

    Start-Run and type

    sfc /scannow

Even if we did this before we need to do it again as the APM device is now there but in error mode.

All of this reprogramming is making me dizzy. But, how's about this for a really FAST shutdown (reduced my time from 3-1/2 minutes to 37 seconds!):

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to display Task Manager. Open the Shut Down Menu, and hold down the Ctrl key as you click the Turn Off command. Ball game!

The only thing I've found faster than this is a simple plug yank. You may get an occasional disk scan nag screen, which you can cancel with a single key stroke.

    Sounds good to me!

Tric if my last message don't work, then try this from Davot!

Even if my solution works try his and pick the best of the 2.

    Thanks Davot!
