In approximately one time in four tries my computer will not enter the 'sleep' mode. This means I must switch off and reboot which is a pain. It seems random. How can I change this?

:) I expect that it means that you have too much open. Sleep stores the current "system" in the RAM (and they expect you have quite a lot). If there is not enough RAM, it will crash.

One or two "large" programs can fill the RAM themselves. Some I can think of are photo/audio/video editors. I wouldn't allow my system to try to go to Sleep with a large program open or say 20, 30 or more tabs open in the browser.

Check what you have open before you walk away from the computer. You could (otherwise) get more RAM. I think it will be more stable if you do.

PS If you want to save your system and have large programs open, use Hibernate. I would mention that Hibernate is more aimed at the laptop computer, at least from my experience. It might be more applicable to desktop computers now. You could check your power settings and do some tests.
PPS The Start (orb) -> Power button in Windows 7 is different from the Vista one. In Windows 7, it shuts the computer down. Does that tell you anything?

I've installed SIW used it to complete my System Information. How do I make it accessible?

First I suggest you check the HP Support site and install any updated drivers and/or BIOS.

I checked my HP support site which provides support only for the printer ... which is unquestionably the worst one I have ever owned.

I have also updated my drivers. Do I need to deal with bios as well? If so, how?

On your computer, you should be able to go to Start (orb) -> All Programs and there should be a HP listing of computer information, software and support information. I expect that you should find a section for getting driver updates.

When you go to the HP Support website,
    www.hp.com/support
put the model number of your computer in the search. The full model number will be listed on a label on the back of the computer. Each model has it's own webpage and from there you can start finding drivers, information (troubleshooting), FAQs, manuals, etc.

Try to get familiar with your computer's webpage. it will be the best source of information (try searching about the problem there).

Mattman you have been very helpful. Thank you. I cannot say the same for HP. I thought I had located my product Serial Number but I was wrong. The lettering is microscopic and I am finding it impossible to reproduce it. I did find a series of numbers that seemed to agree with that on the label shown on the example, but not so. The number I found is CNF8511BCB
I am not very bright, Mattman, only having a Masters and all so I guess I'll have to move on.
I checked my boot list with Win Patrol which caused me to delete a couple of redundant pgms and things seem to be OK for the moment.

Mattman .. Great link! All is forgiven! Spent some time taking care of business. The link is now on my Favorites list and I will go there regularly. Incidentally, I had my Product number already listed, just didn't know what it was ... sheesh.

Mattman, my apologies for not replying to your last message although, quite frankly, I find this system so complex I sometimes get lost in the details!
I know it's discourteous not to reply to a message especially if the problem has been resolved. I am happy to tell you you that your input and suggestions have resolved the issue.
Again, my apologies for not responding earlier.

Glad you found the information. If you can tell us how it was helpful that would aid others.

You can mark the thread Resolved, it is in the Thread Tools.

I followed the suggestions you made, Mattman, and things began to work. What else can I say? Thank you.
