    Still Two Issues - it was a two-fer I couldn't avoid!

Forgot to mention that it's what they used to call a "peer network" so there is no actual server; not since that machine died and I've not yet replaced it. Sharing printers is the only way, other than hanging one off her PC. But we got her printing working again, so it's a non-issue now.

The bigger problem is that error that pops up and needs to have OK licked twice, once for each appearance, before it goes away. Also the Snipping Tool still doesn't want to play nice. I wonder if setting it to Win 7 compatibility will fix it. I'll let you guys know if it does.

Right now, one of the MS people on their help forum told me to run Microsoft Safety Scanner to clear all viruses. It's a fool's errand, and I'm just the person to do it! He did ask, "Do you have "Safer Networking's SpyBot" installed on your computer" - but I don't have that one. I do, however, have SpyBot Search & Destroy, alongside my Norton Internet Security.

So Microsoft Safety Scanner is running now and it looks like an all-day affair, since I asked for a deep scan.

If anyone can think of a resolution for the error in the attached JPG, or a fix for the Snipping Tool not working, please let me know?

    Thanks, everybody, for your help.

    Cheers!

You might try running sfc /scannow to see what happens.

    Hey everybody!

I removed SpyBot Search & Destroy, restarted my system, and the error message is gone. As a bonus, my Snipping Tool now works as before, with a slight differentc - the appearance of a small scissors.

Thanks for putting up with my endless questions.

    Cheers!

Spybot S&D is not the product it used to be in my opinion. Neither is AdAware.

I removed them both a few years back.

Agreed! Long ago when spyware first started to be an issue, Spybot S&D with AdAware were the one-two punch to fight spyware. But today, all anti-malware programs protect against spyware along with viruses, worms, Trojans, etc. so those programs became unnecessary redundancies. Then to make matters worse, they started to cause conflicts. SB's Teatimer was a major culprit - blocking or often corrupting installation of major legitimate programs. A "bug" (??? - some believed intentional) SB acknowledged but took way too long to fix.

Then Lavasoft (makers of AdAware) started removing some known adware from their signature files - meaning they let some adware remain (on the take?) and the company was also acquired by known adware distributors.

So both products fell out of favor.

    What a Lovely Typo!

    Hey Guys!

I swear, I did not lick OK; not even once!:D I did, however, click it twice ...

But I have since posted that I resolved this issue, with some suggestions that were not direct, but made me think they might work for my own problems, and they did.

    Cheers!

    Spybot & AdAware

I agree. I used to trust AdAware completely; I even bought it last year to install on my sis-in-law's laptops. I was unpleasantly surprised and disappointed with the product.

I did think that SpyBot was pretty good, but took way too long to do all its stuff. I liked the depth of its scan for root kit issues but when it got in the way a few days ago and even their forum seemed to be either too slow to respond, or unaware of the effect it had on the upgrade - and I like to think that I cannot be the only one with any given issue - I became very disillusioned.

I won't even try to put it back on this system and may even take it off my laptop and my wife's Win 7 64-bit desktop.

Are any of you familiar with the product Hijack This? It, too, seems to not be the super utility that it once was ...

It has been an adventure, for sure.

One of the side benefits of Start8 - which I bought - is the trial version of Modern Mix. I've used it a little since yesterday, to try running stuff from the Modern/Metro screen on my desktop and so far, it is not all that bad. I may break down and pay for it even before the trial runs out.

Does anybody have any caveats on Modern Mix?

As always, thanks for just being here to vent and discuss things. In so many ways you folks help me learn, fix, and enjoy my system.

    Cheers! And Happy ThanksGivukkah
    !

    Didn'w Work for Me

I'm usually very good at following directions to the letter; this set of instructions resulted in a few minutes' work, with no good results.

I must have done something wrong.

And no, I didn't feel the need to copy or snip the error messages; I simply reversed my work and am happy to use Modern Mix.

BTW, Norton Internet Security gave me big time warnings when accessing some of the web sites involved in those instructions and I even saw a number of so-called side effects in the form of Trojan enablers ...

    And so it goes.
