    SUCCESS! (I hope  )

    What I have done:
I tried removing the entries for mobsync and WinVNC. Only the 04-HKLM WinVNC entry was removed (BTW, the VNC folder is empty).
I found that mobsync needs to be disabled in 5 or 6 settings of "Synchronize ".
I noted that there was no listing for the Service Pack. Updated to SP4.
It seemed to be intermittent (and I was getting depressed).
Went to Dell and got the latest chipset drivers. No stalled shutdowns since then.

I will swap back to the original drive and do those steps in the reverse order to see which one is the problem, but I would say the chipset drivers and SP4 did the trick.

Many thanks for the help from you all.
    Matt

Good news Matt. Also learned that mobsync is mobile synchronization for hand helds. I haven't used My Own Backup software for a few years now but do have mobile synchronization with my PDA and mobsync is clearly there. Not going to install MOB at this point to see if I gave you a bum steer but it sounds like it all worked out OK. Nice move working with a cloned drive too - makes for very safe problem resolution and I think I might tuck that into my own trick bag.

    ;)

    Similar problem, Shut down... Identified

    Hi all..

I'm having a problem similar. Shutdown hangs at "please wait while windows shuts down" screen.

I realized I had the same problem when I used Mcafee Virus supplied with MSN.

Last year I bought Norton, and I didn't have the problem. My subscription ran out and I re-installed Mcafee.. and lo and behold the problem is back.

Any suggestions? I've searched for hangs regarding Mcafee, and have come up dry.
