Shrinking photos to send via Email

    Take a look

    That picture was 400x250 in a file of 14K.

    I edited it with Photosuite and it is now 250x400 in a file size of 15K.

    That has nothing to do with screen settings. And it makes no difference whether you are in 1024x768 or 800x600. That picture WILL REMAIN 250x400 and in a file size on the server of 15K unless I CHANGE IT.

    Unless something has changed that I am not aware of 1024x768 or 800x600 refers to SCREEN ( MONITOR ) DISPLAY settings and not picture or .jpg file size.

    As I said in my earlier reply. It took me A LLOONNGGG time to learn to control picture size so that they DISPLAYED properly in both monitor settings.

    I took a look at the picture in 1024x768 screen resolution and measured its width to be 76mm.

    I changed to 800x600 screen resolution and measured its width to be 94mm.

    I was very scientific ...... :rolleyes: ...... and used a ruler to measure but I didn´t adjust my 17" monitor to have the window fill the screen.

    If I had, my guess is that the picture would have been 97mm wide, 76mmx1024/800=97mm.

    My conclusion is that the displayed size of any picture is proportional to the actual screen resolution.

    If I, in Windows Explorer, right-click on any picture and choose properties, picture data can be viewed.

    I edited a picture, using Microsoft Photo Editor and checked what happened in its properties:

    Original picture (1) - Width 1600, Height 1200, Horizontal Resolution 96dpi, Vertical Resolution 96dpi, File Size 307kB.

    Picture resized by changing Width and Height (2) - 1024 / 768 / 96dpi / 96dpi / 163kB.

    Picture resized by cutting it (3) - 1024 / 768 / 96dpi / 96dpi / 155kB.

    This indicates that if a picture is reduced in size or cut, then the resolution is maintained.

    When resizing the picture it might be logical to think that the information in the original picture is maintained in a smaller picture which would increase the resolution, 96dpix1600/1024=150dpi.

    It is logical for the cut picture, if you cut a piece out of something that is 96dpi then the piece is 96dpi.

    Next I increased the size of picture #2 back to its original size (4) - 1600 / 1200 / 96dpi / 96dpi / 352kB.

    This was not what I expected. I had a Resolution of something like 61dpi in mind, 96 dpix1024/1600=61dpi and a File Size larger than the original size was unexpected too.

    Finally I increased the size of picture #3 to the size of the original picture (5) - 1600 / 1200 / 96dpi / 96dpi / 331 kB.

    This too was unexpected and I had the same in mind as in the previous case.

    Am I the only one to be ...... :confused: ...... is the editing software adding pixels, sort of interpolating, when the size of a picture is increased?

    If you are referring to the picture that I pointed to then you are 100% correct. It will be larger on the screen in 800x600 then it is in 1024x768.

    But that is the DISPLAY size only.

    The difference ON THE screen is due to the LESSER number of pixels ( or dots or what ever ) and /or more space between then in 800x600 then in 1024x768.

    The actuall picture is STILL only 250x400 pixels ( dots ) in size.

    Look at the pix again in about 10 minutes. And you will se that I am controling the individual picture. Not your screen.

    I forgot to mention that a picture will exactly fill the screen if its size in its properties is the same as the screen resolution.

    If the screen resolution is lower then you´ll find scroll bars to use and if the screen resolution is higher the picture won´t fill the screen.

    That is if a picture is opened on the harddrive but what tricks can be played when displaying over the web, I don´t have a clue.

    Look again ina few minutes.

    Well, BillyBob, I didn´t notice any difference ...... :D ...... just joking ...... :D ......

    How about adding a picture that is exactly 1024x768. Then it should fill my screen exactly and we can prove that it works the same way as when viewing a picture stored on the local harddrive. If it needs proving, that is.

    I am in 800x600 so the scroll bars are there.

    I´m in 1024x768 and have scroll bars too. This is due to the Windows window. Even hitting F11 doesn´t give a full screen.

    I saved the picture to my harddisk and chose it as background picture and it fills my screen exactly.

    Now I THINK that I know how it works.

    I noticed that the pictures are displayed differently in a maximized window compared to a reduced size window.

    In a maximized window it looks like it´s one picture but when the window size is reduced they become two on top of eachother, quite slick!

    Now BillyBob, don´t You think that we ought to give Chris D his topic back ...... :D ...... this has become a first class demonstration of how to derail ...... :eek:

    Hey, Thanks again. It was fun reading all the posts. I put 21 photos together with some script and sent it out. Pic2Mail did quite a good job. I guess if all you want is to shrink images a buddy sends you on a CD, it's perfect. Chris

    Here's a perfect photo resizing program that works like a charm and is free....not only does it resize, but you can play around with some photo enhancing filters at the same time, and when you're ready to email the resized picture, it will auto connect to OE.

    That looks like it might even be better than the program I use. I will have to check it out.

    That is a little newer program but looks very similiar ( in use ) to the PhotoSuite !!! that I use to set a picture size.

    How it is displayed on the other partys' screen will be accroding to the Video settings they have..

    Got the trial version of the ReSizer ... you must be testing the 'pro' version. I'm not familiar with it except that they claim it has more bells and whistlesthan the free version but for my purposes, the free version works just fine.

    Appreciate your 'thanks' but I've taken more from this site than I've given back and so I'm always anxious to help others if I can.

    I know this thread is all about reducing the size of pictures to send in e-mail but there is another solution.

    My daughter recently returned from a trip to Ireland and of course had a lot of pictures to send out to friends and relatives. Since there were a huge number of pictures, sending them out as attachments a few at a time was a daunting task.

    She found this website and uploaded all of her pictures and invited everyone to view them on the web. I was able to go to the sight and view and download everything.

    The best part of it is that it's all free! :D

    Just thought I'd throw out another alternative to e-mailing everything. :cool:

    And a good alternative it is.

    But I think now that if we used the ReSizer first to get them all the same slightly reduced size and then use that program I believe it would be great.

    I have tired it with my own web site but I ran out of room so had to scrap the idea for the time being.

    Great little proggie that is I have been trying to find one that is quick to use and simple as that.
    I have sent several Pics. and the Response has been good.
    The first try was sending a Photo to myself and I was happy with the download time in the e-mail.
