(Quote) "At least on the desktop this gets rid of the skinnies spaced too close together. "

I thought you had resolved that problem.

You have not shown your system specifications so I don't know if you upgraded an older PC or bought a new one. I'm thinking you might have a hardware issue.

Like listening to speakers alternately side by side, it can be helpful to compare displays the same way, all running the same OS but with different hardware configurations. Do you have any stores or system builders in your area that will let you do that?

Windows 7 is a very popular OS. It does seem to be optimized for laptops and LCD monitors. In general, most people don't make a lot of adustments, and I don't have any problem reading their displays. I don't really think this is a Firefox problem either.

    Ok,

While I cannot mark the problem resolved I think I'll just let the topic cool off for a while. Since there's nothing saved and I have a backup clone drive for things I do I may just try a scratch install.

That skinnies problem went away when I had the screen size maxed out at 150%: the text on the desktop fattened out like normal helvetca or whatever
the most common san serif font is. But other screen problems followed.

That system with the experimental installs is old and it runs the onboard graphics only.

    System config is:

    Biostar MCP6PB M2+
    Athlon II 2 core cpu
    2 Gb memory
    Stock on board video

    All scratch built.

Windows BBS has been a big help in my various questions on this plus some networking issues between these two rigs. I consider it a valuable resource well-met.

I'll reread the thread too for anything I might have missed or not
    followed through on.

The board has 312 reviews on newegg, 57% with top rating. Not currently stocked. It is said to support Win 7 and few gripes about the on board video. Most reviews are 2010 or before and the first is May 2008. It was designed as an XP board, probably why that works so well. Biostar website has drivers for XP, 2000, Vista, 7x32, 7x64 but nothing video since 2009. Quite a few revision levels, so couldn't pin down your exact board.

    http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=387#dl

Choose your version and click the word driver (below, in red) to get the details.

You know now the available adjustments, how to make them, and which ones provide the most benefit to you. Your idea of a scratch install at this point is a good one. Make the few best adjustments and give yourself some time to get used to the result.

One other possibility is to beg or borrow a video card and see if that makes any improvement.

    We can close this one.

And yes I have updated the drivers best I could.

There are some x64 drivers for this board at a third part source which have not
done any damage that I put in about a week ago.

This particular board was sold as a bundle-- packaged together by the mfg. But
only a fold out map size sheet of board features and placements was provided.

What is your Display resolution set at? And what brand/size monitor are you using?

Rez in Win 7 is 1024 x 768 as you suggested.

The crt monitor is an older 19 " KDS brand sold at our Office Depot. I do not know if tweaking the refresh rate and so on is advised or necessary.

I queried the Videohelp site (highly recommended) on refresh rate and one of the
regulars said he uses 85 hz rather than the 75 found in Win 7 setup. Again I'm just recalling this from things I tried.

The native drivers on that setup is NVidia for the on board video. It is possible that there are no accepted Win 7 driver loads on that cpu. I got a rejection someplace when trying to install the motherboard setup disk after putting on the operating system.

I used to have one of those 19" KDS monitors, good product. No need to fiddle with the refresh rates.

I just reviewed the link for changing type fonts and had better success. I think I was not understanding how many layers to get to the right screen but when finally there I was able to set the type style as Segoe UI with a font size of 12 pt. I found Segoe as an installed style on a sample Windows I saw.

    This may help other users.
