I have been updating a Vista PC and went to download SP2 through Windows Update, which failed multiple times even with the firewall turned off.

So I downloaded the standalone installer from the Microsoft website and installed it from that, only after it restarted following the install, it freezes at 40,000/60,000 registry updating.

Does anyone know a fix for this? It's getting on my nerves because I keep having to do a system restore then it pesters me to install SP2 again.

Have you done SP1 first and all the other updates?

Yes, I spent a couple of days installing all prior updates before it asked me for SP2.

Down CCleaner from the link below. Click on analyze It will analyze what can be removed. Then on the bottom right click on Run Cleaner. When it is finished, go to the registry part on the left side and run it. Then reboot and try downloading SP 2 again from Windows updates.

If the registry is already messed up, I won't run any registry cleaner.

Yeah, especially since fixing the registry could make the orignal posters problem much worse than it is. Also I wouldn't just delete all of the entries that CCleaner marks as bad entries. You really should only use a registry cleaner if you know what keys to remove.

Your choice. I have use CCleaners registry cleaner probably 3 or 4 hundred times and never had a problem. That won't mean that I won't have one the next time. You can always restore if need be as it saves a copy.

I've tried both the clean boot and running the registry cleaner from CCleaner but I am still getting the same problem :( may soon just give up and re-install Windows from scratch.

Ok. Sorry that you had to resort to reinstalling the OS but sometimes that is the only option.

Good luck with the reinstall. :)
