He doesn't care about network or anything other than his computer and monitor. He has written software to immediately save whatever he is working on, as soon as power flickers are noticed.

More likely he installed the software that comes with all APC UPSs for that. It is called PowerChute and uses the communications cable that also comes with all APC UPSs to connect the UPS to an available USB port. You then set it to save open files and shutdown the computer "gracefully" before the batteries run out - IF it has time.

But you have missed the point!!!

That UPS is only capable of delivering a maximum of ~330W of power. Use the eXtreme PSU Calculator Lite to determine your power supply requirements and you will see with that high-end motherboard, big CPU, two graphics cards, and 4 sticks of DDR3 RAM already comes up to 424 watts "minimum ". And that's not counting the two 120 mm fans that come with that case, the SSD, the HD, any optical drive, the alternative cooling solution or any overclocking. Nor is that factoring in maximum TDP or System loads, as you should!!!!

To be sure, I am not harping about this for my benefit.

No, he writes his own programs. That way he can get them to do what he wants rather than just accept what others may think he wants.

The link you gave was for PSUs, not battery backups. He'll have to just unplug the computer and see how long the backup lasts.

I pulled his plug, and he continued to run a highly stressing program for 5 minutes before I turned the power back on, as all he wants is 5 minutes. I guess the 550 suits his needs.

He's happy. That's all that really matters. I watch him creating amazingly complex art without having to wait for everything to render. He loves it.
