I always thought that you needed to have the same Service Pack thats installed on the system, on the Windows XP CD in order for SFC to work. Could you give me a bit more information with how you run SFC on an SP3 system using a Windows XP CD with no Service Packs? I am well aware of the I386 folder and how you can use it to run SFC but how can you run SFC on an updated system and only be using an orginal Windows XP CD with no SP's?

You just run it the standard way and it works - nothing special required.

Windows File Protection service constantly monitors for any changes to the main system files. Windows XP keeps a cache (copy) of these essential files at the following location:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Dllcache (assuming C: is your system root which it probably is.)

In addition to that, Windows caches Service Pack files in the Service Pack Files directory and sub-directories.

When SFC is run, Windows checks these locations for the latest version of a file. If it doesn't find the file in any of these locations, it will request the original install CD since the indication is that the file has never been changed and will be compared to the original on the CD for validity.

I'm all for copying the I386 folder from the CD to a hard drive location and then editing the Registry Key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath so that the CD will never again be requested when running SFC. I keep mine on a 640Gig USB drive.

I should mention that one common mistake when editing that Reg Key is that some people include the full path to the I386 folder. That won't work and will still cause a prompt for the CD. The correct entry for that value string stops short of listing the I386 folder. For example, if the I386 folder is copied to the root of the Z: drive, as mine is, the value data under the Source Path string would be simply Z:\

I tried running sfc /scannow w/ the sliptream disc in the machine and it asked for the XP disc instead, which put me back on square one - nothing happened again.
The conversation has moved over my head, so will one of you tell what to do from here.
Search appears to now work fine, but I'd like to find out if there are any corrupted files on the machine.

It's quite normal to be asked to supply the Original Install CD when running sfc. You can avoid that by doing as I suggested in the last paragraph of my previous post.

That issue has been beaten to death several times on this forum and by using the search feature offered at the top of the page here you will find all the answers you need and probably several you don't. It requires some Registry editing so all the normal cautions apply.

There is a pretty good outline of the SFC process HERE. With the various Service Packs and Updates, the process is pretty convoluted to say the least. The version of your original install CD and the method used to install any Service Packs all come into consideration when working with SFC. Often it is necessary to edit more than one Registry Key to accomplish the task of allowing SFC to run without asking for the install CD.

Since this information is a bit off topic to your original thread, perhaps it's best that you read that link I offered and see if you want to try the process. Then if you hit a snag, start another thread with that topic.

    The search issue is.
The slipstream doesn't appear to be heading in that direction. After trying the 1st directions, that apparently didn't work (probably due to operator error)
and reading the 2nd set, which look way too complicated, I'm probably going to give up since the search aspect is fine, though I'd like to know if there are issues w/ my machine.

If I don't get a response by morning I'll mark this one resolved.

I'll give up on the slipstream for now.
Thx to all who contributed. :)
