Make sure when you are in control panel that you switch to category view. You are viewing control panel in classic view.

    Thx Pete.
I missed the bit about creating a new directory.

Here is what category view looks like in control panel, http://www.auburn.edu/oit/hardware_software/os/images/classic_look2.gif.

Here is what classic view looks like, http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/ct-images/click2.jpg.

I need you to switch to category view in control panel and go to Performance and Maintenance< Indexing Options where you will be able index your harddrive in order to use the Windows Search feature.

    This is SO strange.
My control panel looks like the classic view EXCEPT there is no blue section to the left as in the screen shot.
I tried switching the start menu between the two, but it made no difference.
How do I get that blue section?
I have no way of changing the view.
The only view offered is the drop-down menu which is non applicable.

Pete - In Nero under Image File when I browse to the directory I made/placed the image in it shows nothing (empty directory).

Have you confirmed that the .img file is there through Windows Explorer - if it is not then you have placed ot in the wrong location.

Nero is tricky in that respect - in the file type field, you must select to show the type of image have created or else it only shows its propriatary type or a blank directory if none of those are there. There is also a selection to "Show All Files" - I always use that to cut to the chase.

I still recommend Agent Ransack for your Search Engine. You seem to be having too much trouble installing the Windows Search 4 so that should tell you something. ;)

I figured Pete's suggestion had merit and was worth following no matter what I use for searching, since I know him to be very knowledgeable.

Show All Files was the answer!

When I get to this step:

Next press New, and from the File Browser window, select the files and folders from your slipstreamed location (in my case E:\XP-CD). Now drag & drop the selected files in the ISO1 window.

There are no files listed (no matter what I do) only an image icon labeled Microsoft Corp.
I tried burning this and got nothing.

    Now what?

Click Start< My Computer. At the top click Tools< Folder Options. On the General tab under Tasks select the option that says Show Common Tasks In Folders. When you are done click apply and ok. Now open Control Panel and switch it to Category View.

    While we're here...
Is the boot disc that Pete had me create solely for emergencies?
I'm not sure why he suggested it be made.

Its because if you look on the first page of this thread surferdude2 wanted you to run sfc /scannow from command prompt. The only problem was that you said when you inserted your Windows XP CD it wanted to reinstall Windows and it said that the CD version of Windows was older that you current installation of Windows. Since that happened the only way you could resolve it was by slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and 3 onto the CD. So essentially you need to slipstream Service Pack 2 and 3 onto your Windows XP CD so you can run sfc /scannow which will check your Windows installation for any corrupted files.

Not exactly. You would only need to slipstream the SP's to your original install CD if you wanted to run a Repair Install with the CD.

You can run SFC /SCANNOW with whatever disk that came with your computer. It just needs to have the I386 folder on it. Windows knows where to look if it needs the newer files that have been added by subsequent Service Packs. I do it all the time on systems that have an XP CD that has no SP's at all and their systems are fully up to date with SP3. Never a problem.

I don't think chas ever got booted to the Recovery Console and got sidetracked into inadvertantly requesting a Repair install instead.
