    Ray,

I see Westside has explained that in order to create a new Profile, once the Profile Manager is open, you must then click on: Manage Profiles tab

If when you click on the "Help" tab and it shows Version 1.0.5, then that is the Version you're using. Make a Desktop shortcut for 1.1.7 by using the Version 1.1.7 seamonkey.exe file. To do so:
Right click the Version 1.1.7 seamonkey.exe file
    Select: Create shortcut
Drag the shortcut to the Desktop
Ensure that the existing shortcut is deleted.

If you created the new Profile SM-117 before unzipping Ver. 1.1.7, then that is the only Profile you should use for this Version. That is the purpose of creating the Profile before installing, so it won't pick up any of the other Profiles. By adding the -p SM-117 to the command line ensures that you will only use the Profile created for this version. This is where corruption incurs...

I always recommend a clean install of Java when installing a new Version. Java doesn't install on top of the existing Version. It installs in a separate directory by the Version number. Unlike Westside, I've never had more than one Version installed at one time.

    Install instructions: http://java.com/en/download/help/6000010300.xml
Once you install the new Version, you can test the install here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

In the past year or so, I have had only one version installed, but, initially, I did not know what I was doing, so I kept old versions. That, never, gave me problems, but, honestly, I did not know which one I was using. That is, probably, why I had to copy manually, the newest java .dlls for Netscape or SeaMonkey. But, I am "clean" now.

Ok, based on your answer, I choose to un-install the "Java Runtime" and the "Java Web Start" prior to installing the new version 6 of Java.

Java 6 is now installed and it appears everything is OK. However, I now only have the one program showing in the Add-Remove shown at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-8.jpg

However, I am a little confused because, The first Java link you sent me to the web site at:... http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and provided me with the download file of jre-6u3-windows-j586-p-s.exe which is the one I download and installed after reading this the first time.

Your last reply (This One) had a second Java link (Web Start) which took me to the web site at:.. http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/ and provided a download file named jdk-6u4-windows-j586-p.exe

It is only the first one, which was the jre-6u3-windows-j586-p-s.exe file that I installed.

It appears the second web site was a development web site. So, I am a little confused about the situation and wondering if I need both downloads.

I am assuming that the only Java file I need is the first one which is JAVA version 6 and it includes the "Web Start" from with-in the program and I don't need to install anything from the "Web Start" link you provided. Is this correct ???

I think we are doing pretty much the same thing. I always download any new program to a folder on Drive D which I have named DOWN.

If the downloaded file is a ZIP file, I then un-zip the files from the DOWN folder to where ever I want the unzipped files located.

In this case I unzipped the downloaded file of "seamonkey-1.1.7.en-US32.zip" from the D:\DOWN folder to the drive C folder I had previously made and named SM-117 which was the path of C:\2-NET\SM-117

This of course gave me the completed path of C:\2-NET\SM-117\Seamonkey

Had I known before hand that the zipped file created this Seamonkey folder on it's own I would not have created the SM-117 folder and unzipped directly to to the 2-NET folder and then I would would have had a path of C:\2-NET\Seamonkey

The SM-117 folder I created serves no useful purpose.

I did not un-install version SM 1.0.5 --- I currently have SM 1.0.5 installed at:.. C:\2-NET\S-MONKEY and SM 1.1.7 is installed at C:\2-NET\SM-117\Seamonkey

SM 1.0.5 uses the profile of D:\PROFILES\RAY-2008 and SM 1.1.7 uses the profile of D:\PROFILES\SM-117

However, when SM 1.1.7 loads it indicates the 1.0.5 version as shown by the screen image at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-7.jpg

I believe the reason for this is because the SM-117 profile was created using SM 1.0.5 but, I would have thought the version number would have been with in the program files and not the profile files.

Westside and Ramona -- The time it took to write all this you each left me another reply and I did not know that until I had submitted this posting until and now I am editing this note in to let you know that.

Again Thanks for the help -- Ray

For the first part of your question, to which I had briefly answered, I got this quote:
. May be you did not understand this.
I am getting lost again. Could you be more succinct? I am trying to combine the info from this and the previous post, and, either you or I, are missing something.
In the previous message you said:
The path is ok, but I can't tell what is complete path. And, you can't create a profile with another program, if you don't do any more than creating.
I think that I indicated that unzipping the downloaded file would create a "seamonkey" folder, which I renamed. So, if you wanted to unzip the downloaded file, it should be located in D:\DOWN\seamonkey (I use Archives\). You can rename it or not, but that's the folder which will have your shortcut.
Somehow, you must be using the seamonkey.exe from 1.0.5.
I think that your method of placing programs in one partition, and profiles in another, may lead to confusion. I don't know what the
path is, but it can't be right.
I have to know where you got the shortcut from, to get any idea of what's going on.

    Greetings to all,

Going way back in the post..........

I finally was able to replicate the messed up screen that was posted at:
    http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-2.jpg
    Using:
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.9) Gecko/20071030 SeaMonkey/1.1.6 ID:2007103013

but it took alot of dinkin....

you get this mess when you have "chromedit sm 2.6.2" (chromedit-sm-2.6.2.xpi) installed
(from this site= http://webdesigns.ms11.net/seamonkey.html) - I installed to the "Profile" NOT the "Program" directory......

    AND THEN you UNINSTALL IT..........
    using:
    extensionuninstaller-1.3-mz+tb.xpi

I did not like chromedit sm 2.6.2 'cause of the icon in the tool bar)

to fix the mess, install chromedit 0.1.1
    (from this site = http://cdn.mozdev.org/)

install over the top of the mess that you have.

I don't know what the effect would be IF you installed to the "Program" directory........or uninstalled using something else (MTLI ?)

    Does this help any ?

    regards:captjlddavis

    Capt.
your observations are, always very good.
Sometimes, one takes for granted what he/she has beside the barebones program. But, even one add-on can cause havoc. And, the problem may be incomprehensible to others. I am using six add-on, and a Theme (Toy Factory) in the installed version of 1.1.7, and three add-ons, and the Modern theme in the unzipped folder. The User Agent for the "unzipped" differs by that of the installed only by the Gecko date, 11-18 for the installed, and 11-28 for the unzipped.

Ramona, I use to make short cuts as you described but, I find the easiest way to make a Desktop Icon is how Westside explained it back in a previous reply to this thread and that is to Right Click on "seamonkey.exe" and highlight the "Send To" and then click on "DeskTop (Create Shortcut)" It's all done and over with. It's short and sweet with no draging and no deleting necessary.

I did do a clean install and a big Thanks for the test link --- I ran it and got a "Congratulation" -- "I had successfully installed the latest and greatest version of Java. "

    Thanks again, Ray

Sorry for the confusion, I am now OK with the JAVA installation. I thought I understood you but, was double checking so I ask again. Ramona provided me a link to test JAVA and that is all fine now.

NO, My Unzip program, "Powerdesk" allows me to send the unzipped files to any folder on the computer and in this case I unzipped the SM 1.1.7 download zip file from D:\DOWN to C:\2-NET\SM-117 and this can be seen by the screen image in Windows Explorer at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-9.jpg

I have good reason for keeping my Profiles on Drive D which is not a partition but, a totally separate 80 gig hard drive.

The 40 gig hard drive C in my computer is removable and I can switch from a Windows XP operating system to a Windows-98 operating system in less then five minutes by just swapping the C hard drive out with a different hard drive containing a different version of Windows including Vista if I had it.

Having the Profiles on the D hard drive allows me to access the same profiles, e-mail, and data files regardless of which operating system I have in the computer. i.e. the Windows 98 or XP hard drive.

Hopes this makes sense and explains why the Profiles are on another hard drive. I still use Windows 98 sometimes because it has programs on it that will not run in XP.

The path is correct as proven by the screen print image taken in Windows Explorer and reflected at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-9.jpg

Let me assure you I have the short cuts going to the correct version and that is not the problem.

You can even forget the short cut. Because, If I take the program Windows Explorer and go to the 1.1.7 Seamonkey folder as shown in Windows Explorer image at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-10.jpg and double click on the excutable file of "seamonkey.exe" the program will load and a check of the version indicates it is version 1.0.5 as shown in the image at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-7.jpg

For what it's worth I kept the new version 1.1.7 (Profile SM-117) in the default Theme of "Classic" while the 1.0.5 Seamonkey is using the "Modern" Theme (Profile RAY-2008). I did this on purpose so there was no question which profile was being used with which version and that can be seen by the image at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-6.jpg

When Ramona asked me to try 1.1.7 again I told her I hoped she didn't live to regret it because I knew I had something real weird going on and it was going to take some time and some long posting messages to tell it all.

I do appreciate the help and applogise for the long post but, I sure don't understand what is going on with this version bit.

So far as the problem of loosing the mail 3 times in 3 weeks, I'm no longer really concerned because for the time being I set it so all the mail is left on the ISP server as well as making regular mail backups myself.

I hope I cleared up some things and you now understand my reasons for keeping the profiles on a different hard drive.

    Ray

I will be brief, because after replying to your entire message, I went to take another look to an sm, and exited without posting.
So, 1. I did not understand that the DOWN folder was used only to download the file. I download to the Desktop. I, then, select the Archive folder to store the folder unzipped by AlZip. So, we are doing the same thing, except that I delete the .zip file as soon as I am satisfied.
As for the rest, I understand why you do what you are doing. I, find it hard enough to keep track of one partition, but I am using an external drive, also.
I had two partitions when I had only Win 98, keeping my profiles in the D drive. All went well until I tried Linux, which wiped out all I had on the D drive.
I looked at your sm-10, and I am perplexed. Yes, you do do have an SM-117 folder, but also a S-MONKEY folder, right below. What is in it?
I am just guessing that the original 1.0.5 was renamed to SM-117.
I can't explain what's going on. As for losing the mail, this, possibly, could happen, using a profile with the wrong program.
In my case, I am using two entirely different builds of the same version of 1.1.7, placed as far apart as possible, and run with different profiles. I never lost anything.

The Seamonkey 1.1.7 version is located in the SM-117 folder.

Seamonkey 1.0.5 is in the S-Monkey folder.

And YES I too am perplexed.

    Ray,

Have you checked your Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings to see if the "Local directory" path points to the correct Profile? Is it pointing to the Mail Account folder for 1.0.5, or 1.1.7?

Did you copy anything from the 1.0.5 *.slt file to the 1.1.7 *.slt file? The weirdness is because you have a corrupt Profile in Version 1.1.7.

EDIT: I was reminded by captjlddavis of another way to check the location of the Profile:

Right click on any folder in the Accounts left panel
    Select: Copy folder location
Open Notepad: right click, and select Paste

This will indicate the location of the Mail Account folder you are using.

Well Yes, Sort of, I always know where my mail folders are because I create them myself and then setup Seamonkey to use those folders.

However, I never mess with the "Local Folders" and allow them to do as they please. Frankly, I wish I could delete the "Local Folder" because I've never found a need for it and always wondered what purpose it serves and why it is not made erasable.

Now perhaps I am goofing up and there is something I need to know but, as I stated at the beginning of this thread I don't do the normal thing when it comes to my computer.

However, I will also say that it can't be too wrong because I have successfully setup Netscape and Seamonkey and used the exact same setup for several years and never had a problem until the new profile for 2008 was created using SM 1.1.7 for the first time to create a profile.

Let us remember, that I first installed SM 1.1.7 on either 11/31 or 12/1, 2007 and started using the same profile SM 1.0.5 had been using which was named RAY-2007.

SM 1.1.7 used the RAY-2007 profile for 4 weeks with out any prblems.

Then a few days before the end of the year I made a new profile (RAY-2008) which I started using on January 1st, and at that time I copied over the files of bookmark.html, abook.mab and also abook1.mab through abook13.mab.

You will recall we had a Thread (Address Books) about 3 weeks ago on this because the only address book to show up in the new profile was the "Personal Address Book" and I ask in a Thread if there was a way to get the other address books into the new profile besides Export/Import and You answered NO.

So, the answer to the above is that I had copied over, 14 different abook files plus the bookmark file.

I did as suggested and the results for the location of the "Local Folders" can be seen in a screen image at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-11.jpg

For testing purposes I created an e-mail address of "sm-117@smyth1.net" on my web site and then in the SM-117 profile I created a mail box named SM-117 and that folder location can be seen at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-12.jpg

I will show you in another reply exactly how I create and use my mail folders within a profile. However, I may not get that done tonight

Thanks for all the help:.......... Ray

Yes, I do recall the thread, and this is what I said:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=70055

    "Ray,

No magic bullet for this process. Export the 2007 Address Books as LDIF files, and then Import the LDIF files into the 2008 Profile. It doesn't take long, as I just did 5 AB's, and it went in a flash! "

The Local Folders are used to store Newsgroup Messages, or to archive other Mail. Local Folders also stores Unsent messages when a user works offline.

I tried to duplicate your problem last night by uninstalling everything SeaMonkey, and cleaning my Registry of SeaMonkey keys. I installed 1.0.5 and let it pick up the existing SM Profile. Checking the Help | About SeaMonkey, the correct version appeared.

Next, I unzipped 1.1.7 letting it also use the existing Profile. Again, checking the Help | About SeaMonkey, the correct version appeared. I toggled back and forth between the two Versions several times, and the correct version always appeared in the Help | About SeaMonkey.

I still think the problem is a corrupt Profile, and you should at least try creating a new "Test" profile, without any copying of files. Create one Mail Account in the new Profile and use it a couple of days to see if the Mail problem reappears.

BTW, what extensions are you using? Since captjlddavis figured out the weird screen you were getting related to an extension, I wondered if you were using any others?

    James,

So you did! I knew that you had mentioned Themes, but I did lose track of the extensions... Thank you for reminding me.

James, I have not installed any extensions myself -- I don't know much about extensions since to my knowledge I never use them - I did ask Ramona one time about extensions and she explained extensions but, apparently they were not too important to me because I have now forgotten what she said.

I did do a search for extensions and I do have both folders and files with the name "extensions"

For your review and evaluation I did a print screen of the search and all the files and folders found on my computer with the word "extensions" can be seen at:.. http://www.raysmyth.net/sm-13.jpg

I have 2 extra hard drives which I use for backups only and I did edit out the extension files found on those drives just to eliminate confusion.

The screen print will also advise that SM 1.0.5 has now been removed from my computer and I will be addressing that in a reply Ramona.

Thanks for your help -- Ray

I am, no longer, even trying to understand your problems. I am, probably, as confused as you are. It is not easy to tell which extentions you have in Seamonkey, but they would be in the profile|extentions|a number|usually chrome and install files. If you single the chrome file, it will tell you which extention you have. Both profiles of mine seem to have only one listed extention, i.e. forecastfox. But, I know that I have more, as shown by the extention uninstaller (which requires two files to be installed to show up, in Tools). I like the Firefox way which shows the add-ons ( alias extentions).

Well I've done everything but, throw the computer in the dumpster so, I don't mind doing that however, the fact is, day before yesterday I was going back and forth doing different things when all of a sudden, I loaded SM 1.1.7 and there was the correct version showing. 15 minutes and a few loads/unloads later and it was back to telling me it was a 1.0.5 version.

I've not mentioned this fact because I figured everybody would think I been in the sauce or didn't know what I was doing.

Then late last night even before I read your above suggestion I deleted the SM-117 profile and created another new one. Bingo, the new profile now showed version 1.1.7.

I could load SM 1.0.5 and it showed version 1.0.5 and I could load SM 1.1.7 and it showed version 1.1.7. So I went to bed which was real early this morning thinking the new profile had corrected the problem.

I get up late this afternoon load up SM 1.0.5 to read my e-mail and read this very post from Ramona suggesting I create a new profile and I was ready to reply to tell you I had beat you to it by creating a new profile and that corrected the problem.

I then thought I would try 1.1.7 one more time to make sure it still indicated the correct version. Thats' right it was back to showing 1.0.5

Now I sure wasn't going to tell you that it showed 1.1.7 and then a few hours later for no reason it was back to showing 1.0.5 because even I know computers don't do that.

But, there it was and the gremlins had returned.

Weird - Weird - Weird - So, I tired once more to delete and then create another new profile. No luck this time the new profile still indicated version 1.0.5

My next thoughts were, well I will get rid of this dog gone 1.0.5 and see what happens.

So, for the record, Let us remember that SM 1.0.5 was an installed copy of Seamonkey located in the path of C:\2-NET\S-MONKEY.

AND, SM 1.1.7 was a ZIP copy of Seamonkey located in the path of C:\2-NET\SM-117\Seamonkey

I went to "Control Panel" - "Add and Remove Programs" and removed Seamonkey 1.0.5 all the while wondering if 1.1.7 was going to work after I removed 1.0.5 since 1.0.5 was the only Seamonkey showing as being installed.

I was pleased that YES it does work and YES it now shows the correct versions.

I will let the experts figure out what caused the correction. All I did was remove SM 1.0.5 and 1.1.7 starts showing the correct version. Go Figure.

I will now start using the only version of Seamonkey now on my computer which is a ZIP copy of SM 1.1.7 located at C:\2-NET\SM-117\Seamonkey and using a profile at:.. D:\PROFILES\RAY-2008

Ramona, I answered this in a reply to a post by James, shown above

    Thanks to everybody --- Ray

    Ray,

What caused the "problem" is academic at this point. Is it safe to say that you:
    1. NOW have SM 1.1.7 (running from zip file) and working to your satisfaction ? (Y/N)
    2. Browser working ? (Y/N)
    3. Mail working (Y/N)
    4 Address books working (Y/N)

    please answere by number :D

    regards:captjlddavis

    1. NOW have SM 1.1.7 (running from zip file) and working to your satisfaction ? - YES
    2. Browser working ? - YES
    3. Mail working - YES
    4. Address books working - YES -- Except I have several to import in as yet but, the Personal Address Book has been imported in using LDIF and works fine.

Everything appears to be fine - Just hope I don't have corrupt mail again in a few days. But, I expect something was wrong in the previous download and install of 1.1.7 and this new ZIP download will be fine because I've never had such a problem before. However, I will remain curious why the wrong version was showing up.

    Thanks -- Ray
