Hi James, cspgsl has tried all the other avenues without success, hence the bottom line choice.
I assume that the existing Files are badly corrupted and won't respond to the fixes available. Neil.

Agreed, but let's hope cspgsl doesn't run into the trouble that I did.

I had to either reinstall Windows 7 from scratch (if a disk was available), or deal with recovery partitions.

    An Update

There was no pressing urgency to the job so I thought I would see if I could fix it first and I am grateful for the thoughtful posts to my query. Had I had been on my city connection, I would have tried the reinstall first to see if it would have cleared the issue as it would have been relatively quick. In fact, I likely wouldn't have bothered posting or searching for as long as I did for a solution, prior to.

I have previously done several re-installs (vs.fresh installs) on various computers, with both OEM and MS disks and have never had a problem with Windows afterward (just lucky I guess) however, I have also found that you can still end up with other issues you wish you had thought of at the time, and could have gotten rid of.

In this case, I am on a rural internet connection (the price one pays for an office view of the ocean vs. one's neighbour's yard) that is painfully slow compared to my city service so, given that I was about to spend hours online downloading, I thought it best practice in this case, to wipe clean and reinstall a completely new copy. As is my practice, I had already done a full backup prior to this entire exercise so I could go either way without the fear of data loss.

I have used a MS version vs. the OEM version I have and about 12 hours later, it is done and working fine.

Again, thanks to everyone for their contributions.

I have not found such issues with any of my Win 8 machines and have found that the builds I have been using of Win 10 seem equally as reliable if not more so however, that is best suited for another discussion.

    Cheers everyone :)
