Yes Mark, from the utility disc that came with the mobo, except for the SATA drivers which at that stage, i did not need.

The SATA setup in BIOS: The extended IDE drive = Auto and the Access mode = Auto

Wildfire, i have updated my sysinfo regarding the HDD's, thank's for bringing it to my attention.

JP, only after i have copied the SATA drivers from the utility disk to a floppy, format the HDD and install it with XP, will i know if the "new" device fine. I wll also test it on another PC to make sure of it's condition.

Good night guy's, i off to bed now!

Hallo Mark, it look's like your 2nd option has done the trick! But there is a twist in the
    tail.

I took a old 20gig drive with the same O/S on and did a clean install together with the SATA drivers on floppy. Once in Windows i installed the utility cd, my 3G modem, download and installed the service packs and then updated Windows.

The only devices connected to the pc was the HDD on primary IDE, the floppy and the LH-20A1L on SATA channel 1. The Lite-On work's fine, does everything it's suppose to do!

Now for the twist...i replaced the 20gig with the 320gig with the idea to repeat the whole process. Luckily for me i forgot to insert the installation cd before start up so i let it open Windows and can you believe it..Lite-On still runs like a charm!!

Now ***, how is this possible, all the changes was made to the 20gig?? Anyway, i am not complaining. Iwill run it hard the next couple of day's and if there is no further problems then i might install the the other DVDRW.

 I can only guess it has changed something in the Bios. Have a look through and see if you can detect what has changed in the Channel 1 SATA setup.

Lets hope the SATA Channel 2 still works.

Under Integrated Peripherals > IDE function setup > Serial ATA Controller [All Enabled]

Do you have a setting like this in your bios, had you looked at it before the fresh install.

No, do not see something like that but there is:
    OnChip SATA = Enabled
    Sata Mode = IDE

I will look in the 20gig Bios and come back to you.

The bios will be the same with either drive. Bios is saved on the motherboard not on the hard drive.

Have you tried to run with both SATA DVD's connected yet?

What other choice is there for "SATA Mode" I think that should be set to SATA but it worked with one DVD connected so try it first with both or individually if there is a problem.

I have just tried with the new Atapi iHAS324. Sometimes BIOS detects it but then comes to a halt, can't even get into BIOS. When it do pass BIOS it runs to where the MS logo starts and then halts.

Only once (out of about 10 attempts did it get into Windows and that took about 15 minutes! And during this whole process you can hear the DVD runs as if there is a disc in it that it tries to read.

I am going to take it to a friend of mine in the morning, he also uses the same model in his system without any problems and then take it from there.

Sounds like that Atapi DVD drive has some errors. Guess you will be able to establish that if you can swap it with the DVD in your friends PC.

Hi Mark, the Atapi DVD drive tested ok on my friend's pc. Back home i installed the SATA VIA Serial ATA drivers again on the 20gig HDD as in chapter 4.8 of the manual and now everything is fine!

I then add the Lite-On on channel 2 and it is still good. Next i add one of the 320gig HDD as a slave on the Primary IDE, still no problems and then i took out the 20gig HDD and add the other 320gig HDD as a master.

Now my system is fine, everything work's like it is suppose to work and i am very happy.

I thank you for your patience and help.

    Good news!!

I can only guess that something went wrong with the original install of the SATA drivers:confused:

Anyway, glad I was able to help and Happy New Year.
