    Hi Aussie

I see you have gotten into safe mode so I post this as an alternative for you and others who find it hard to get to safe mode.

    D/L & install.

    BootSafe. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/bootsafe.html

Run from full mode. Once run you will stay in Safe mode untill you run it again and choose full mode. This is excellent in cases where for some reason you do not want to reboot to full mode.

Additionally when MS Defrag don't work an alternative defragger usually will, so try the below. If one of these work to completion that usually fixes the problem with the MS defrag.

    http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/

    http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php

    Last but perhaps the best
    Power Defragmenter http://www.excessive-software.eu.tt/
Requires this in same folder: http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Contig.html

Before anyone goes off using safe mode utilities, I urge you all to read a post by Calamity Jane, wherein she posted information written by Blender about the dangers of using these tools.

You can find that post on this DSLR page. Look for a sticky in the Spyware & Virus Removal forum today in this regard.

Thanks for the heads up Dave. That's good advice for those who aren't handy with the tools.

For my own situation, I don't see it as a big issue since, contrary to what Calamity says, it's relatively easy to edit the boot.ini file in XP using a boot floppy or CD that is freely available for that purpose. One can also use the "Quick Boot" floppy or CD for that purpose.

    BootINIeditFloppyCreator

    I agree with Dude!

She is right about MSCONFIG though. It should not be used for this.

I have used this for years, reccomended it to friends with no problems.

There is no goggle about it (BootSafe) or much at all about Safe Mode causing problems "even" with malware cleaning. In fact Safe mode is reccomended very often with malware cleaning and in some cases perhaps the only way.

But there was no indidcation of Malware here. Some computers are just stuborn to get into Safe mode.

Someone exported the Safe mode registry keys from a clean XP install and made a repair for it

Hey Dude, I found the answer by accident.
If I switch off the computer just as Windows is loading, when I turn it back on a screen comes up telling me windows failed to load properly and do I want to boot in safe mode, safe mode with networking etc...

That's one way of skinnin' the cat John.

You should consider getting a boot floppy or boot CD that will allow you to select Safe Mode when you need it. Either the XPquickBootFloppyCreator or the XPquickBootCDiso I linked in post #25 above will do that job for you. That way you are not putting yourself at risk of getting into an endless loop as TeMerc pointed out.

    All the best.
