    RTHDCPL.exe Fix

Hi All, New here, Just read the group concerning the mentioned RTHDCPL issue, My wife and a friend have had the same issue that seems to relate to Realtek Soundcards on HP machines.
So far My Wife, a Friend and a Co-Worker have called with same issue and they all have HP machines.
My Machine does not have Realtek sound so the issue does not apply to me. Good advice from above posts fixed 3 issues in 15 minutes of calls, but what do we tell people about the Auto Update? Wait 2 weeks for a Patch to Patch for the patch and if that patch dosen't work then we have to uninstall ALL the patches to install a Service pack patch for all the patches to be patched?:D

Good advice thanks. Just say NO to Vista.

    Hello TheWyrm,

    First, yes, wait a while.

Second, blindly downloading/updating is not the way to go.

Change the AU options to notify before download and then do one at a time, wait a day or two, then the next.

Criticals create system restore points and create Add/Remove entries. You should make sure that SR is first, enabled, and that the restore function works. For those that use drive imaging, SR can be optional. For most, SR is the only way to roll back a bad update, or system problems in general.

    To test SR's restore function:

Take any executable file (extention .exe), and burn it out and/or move it to the My Documents folder and delete it from it's original location. SR does not monitor files in My Documents folder regardless of file type.

Then restore to the initial restore point created by the system; the deleted executable should be back in it's original location. Afterwards, you can delete the copy in My Documents.

FYI: The file types (extensions) SR monitors

Ya, My Co-Worker who is a little more "Tech Savvy" never clued into the Auto-Update and tried a SR to 2 days prior. All XP did was re-download patch and same issue again.
He called me last night after work and i told him to change his auto-update to "Download first then ask ". He is All Good, But the others are not so Tech Friendly.

I just looked for the simplest fix and they asked what they should do now? Explaining to them to check back in 2 weeks dosen't really work cuz they get lost in the Tech aspect.
The end result will be that they never install updates again.

Not good, I think MS should have planned this a little better, It's gonna wreak havoc on users that just "Use" their machines but have no idea what makes them tick.
