Today I had my browser IE6 hijacked by an email program pretending to be the virus, advised machine would be shutdown in 60 seconds by the NT Authority unless I clicked the "buy now" button to purchase software to cure it.

Since I had the patch installed and Norton's latest definitions, I wasn't too worried. But every time I shut down the web page, it just took me back to the same site. I had to shut down to get rid of it as it also covered up the start button. Had to use Cntrl-alt-delete to shut down.

I'm sorry I didn't pay much attention to where it was coming from to report it to my ISP.

I would like to suggest that you get MailWasher and use to pre-screen you e-mail right on the server.

It DOES NOT download it. It just shows what is on the server and you can DELETE it right off of the server.

I have been deleting a LOT of trash lately.

If it looks suspicious then delete it. I have had returned mail several times in the last few days and I have yet to figure out how mail that was never sent can be returned..

I used to have a free program that was like the pay Mailwasher. It just didn't bounceback. I can't find it.

Anyway, I got attacked by the virus in my backup computer. I Drived Imaged it out of my machines. I just executed a stored image file. It took all of about 15 minutes to get everything back to normal.

Got the barn doors up. I activated the firewall!

Hey BillyBob: I read the other post, good information there. I bought and installed MailWasherPro, but before I figured out how to use it, I had that crash and ever since I've been trying to get this machine back to where I can spend some time using it instead of fixing it.

    Thanks for all your help.

Well actually I AM VERY LUCKY that I am even on here tonight.

We were involved in the power outage up here. Some places around us still do not have power.

It took three reboots and a LOT OF PRAYING to get this machine backup and running. XP did a good job.

The power did not go out at first. We had two brownouts first. And I was out in the other room when it started. And if you think that I was not worried. Think again. I was installing software on one machine and have one BAD MESS with that one. But tomorrow is another day.

Wow, that must have been tough, especially for those stuck in elevators and in the NY subway. The only effect here was the networks out of New York were off the air for a while, or at least, not coming through on my sattelite dish.

Which reminds me, I have to do something about my UPS, if the power goes out and stays out, it works fine. But, if the power blinks off then on, it quits. Always something to fix or buy.

Billy Bob Thanks. I agree that if an image file/ghost is made of a drive that has a virus, that virus will be included in the file.

But I have many files image files that I know are image free. The earlier I made them, the more adjustment I have to make to them to get them current. The known virus free have a good basic hardware and software load with most Windows updates. Those updates were loaded by disk BEFORE logging onto the internet.

Then, I have images that are made after I logged on. Those could have a virus. But probably not. But if I ever reload an infected image, I'll just get an earlier image until I find one not infected.

Well I do have to say that at least you are doing some THINKING and Planning.

And your reply says quite clearly that you are aware of what can happen.

    :):)
    :):)

Are you sure that is what you meant to say ? Don't you mean Virus free ?

Billy Bob You caught me babbling. But once I deleted part of the wrong image. So that file was image free! :) I had the files split so in case I wanted to burn them to CD!
