Unfortunately Windows Repair didn't fix firewall issue:
    One more try...

    • Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    • At the command prompt, type the following command line, and then press ENTER:
      Rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf
    • Restart Windows,
    • Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    • At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
      Netsh firewall reset
    • Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then press ENTER. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click On (recommended), and then click OK.

broni, I am on my Windows 7 now; but we are going back to that corrupt driver, RAS Async Adapter that will neither uninstall, update nor remove. The fact that we disabled it in Device Manager would explain why we receive such cockeyed results.

RAS Async Adapter has nothing to do with firewall issue.

Windows Firewall was already On. Both firewall settings and command line are still up.

broni, could something we did in either the Windows files or Registry all of a sudden make this possible? Control Panel already showed the Firewall on; and I could not bring up settings to either turn it off or add anything to it like sites or programs to allow access. This is the first time in a long time that I saw those settings. It was the command fireewll.cpl that did it. Those command lines never before worked for me.

broni, I closed out of Windows Firewall and I can access its settings through Control Panel. In the Exceptions tab, Remote Assistance is checked with "No" after it. Should we leave it that way? When Control Panel says "On" under Security Essentials, I just figured that it is not referring to Windows Firewall, but any firewall running in place of it.

Leave Remote Assistance as it is.
I don't see Microsoft Security Essentials installed on your computer.
    You use Baidu AV.

Sir, I was referring to Control Panel, Security Center, and not any Microsoft extra.

Yes, ON applies to any AV or firewall.

So, broni, now that the problem appears fixed, what do you think caused it? You don't think this RAS Async Adapter had anything to do with it? The installation of that WD HD may have been just a coincidence. Did I do something in Registry? I do not use uninstallers often and never use Temporary File Cleaning programs. Those types of maintenance programs can do damage to Registry.

There is no way for me to say what was the cause of your issues but you surely had number of issues which we fixed.
One more time...leave RAS Async Adapter alone. It doesn't bother anything.
    You're good to go.

    Good luck :)

broni, do you suggest against trying to remove RAS Async Adapter?

broni, there are already two forums in Networking, both concluded with a clean Windows XP install suggestion. Now, in Control Panel, it runs Internet Connection Sharing before bringing up the settings.

    One more time...

In this forum, we make sure, your computer is free of malware and your computer is clean :)
Because the access to malware forum is very limited, your best option is to create new topic about your current issue, at Windows section.
    You'll get more attention.

Unfortunately I don't have enough time to deal with computer infections and other Windows issues.
Since your Windows seems to be fine I'm not even sure what do you want to inquire about.

If RAS Async Adapter I gave you my opinion twice already.
That's all I can do for you.

broni, your expertise does not allow you to get nasty especially when you lead me around in circles in the same way as government agencies and police. This last post discredits everything else worthwhile you did and characterizes you as abusive.

    Excuse me?
I patiently spend 7 pages fixing your computer, answering same questions several times and now you're offending me?
