So what the Import Wizard reports must be dependent on which Gecko applications are installed on the System. I'll do some checking to see if I can confirm.

I was composing as other were replying - excuse the redundancy

    Using: xp home sp1
FF 1.0.3 (final) installed to E:\ drive

After following this thread I became curious as to just what goes on, I installed ns 4.79 to its default location.
    I created a profile=jld_1
    NS created the profile in:
    c:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\jld_1\

FF import wizard uses the nsreg, dat file in c:\windows to point to the profile location.

    Import wizard (File import) shows

    Microsoft Internet Explorer
    Netscape 6, 7 or Mozilla
    Netscape 4.x

    selecting Netscape 4.x shows jld_1
    selecting jld_1

    wizard show:
    cookies
    bookmarks

    selecting "Bookmarks -Manage bookmarks "
    wizard shows:
    Microsoft ....explorer
    Netscape 6............Mozilla a.x
    Netscape 4.x
    From file

This is what Ramona reported, though she uses Win 98se.

I don't know if XP Pro would be different from Xp Home in this situation.

But that appears to be the major difference between what you say you are getting and what I get.

You either have to have NS 4.x installed on the machine, or have a valid nsreg.dat file in the c:\windows directory and the files located in the path that it points to.

    I removed NS 4.79 via add/remove programs.
It removed all the ns 4.x data BUT did not remove profiles OR nsreg, dat file ( it also left behind a lot of other stuff in the registry.)

FF wizard STILL points to the correct profile even though 4.x has been removed.

1.Have you ever had ns4 on the laptop ?
    2.Do you have a valid nsreg.dat in the c:\windows directory ?
3 Are the profiles from 4.x still on the machine ?

These are just my observations, your mileage may differ.

    Mike and Ramona ...

I don't have either Netscape or Mozilla installed on either computer.

Both programs were installed on the desktop more than two years ago, before I began using Firefox, but the registry has been cleaned of any traces of either several times. Neither has ever been installed on the laptop.

    1. No, only on the desktop

    2. Yes, only on the desktop

    3. No
As soon as I deleted the nsreg.dat file from C:\Windows, the "Netscape 4.x" selection disappeared from the Import Wizards.

Now we know. Good job, Cap'n!

Most likely one needs to have the profiles to list the settings. The profiles are not removed with the uninstallation, but if a computer never had any applicable profiles or settings it would not list to import from. My File|Import has IE, Netscape6/7 or Mozilla1.x, Opera. Everything which is listed in the bookmarks manager save from File.

    Westside,

I don't have the Save from file, or Opera listed. I'm thinking the Bookmarks thing is because I have used the same Profile for eons. However, I do have Opera installed?

    Ramona ...

Just to clarify, Firefox has two different Import Wizards. The one you show in your screenshot is the one opened from the Firefox window's File menu. It allows you to import "Options, Bookmarks, History, Passwords and other data ".

There is a second one, opened from the Bookmarks Manager's File menu, which imports only bookmarks. That's the one that shows "From File ".

I had Opera installed on my desktop computer once, but removed it long ago. It isn't listed in either Import Wizard.

Yes Jim, you are absolutely correct. I realized it once I looked in the Bookmark Manager, and saw that this was what Westside was referencing...

I just imported my Opera bookmarks (Hotlist) into the NS8 beta profile from File|Import, and realized that the duplication of the Import Wizard in Manage bookmarks is convenient, if you are already there, but not as practical as it is to do it directly from File|Import. Of course, one has to be careful to just select what is necesssary. I did not understand this user-friendly feature until now.
