I am thinking about removing my USB 1.0 (or 1.1 not sure which) and replacing it with 2.0. I have read my motherboard manual but it doesn't say if I can do that.

My co-worker says just buy a USB 2.0 hub and plug it in but that doesn't make sense ----- I would be plugging the 2.0 into the 1.0 and getting the same result as when I plug my flash drive in.

I just want to know if it is worth it (access time wise) to even bother trying to replace the two ports I have. I plan on buying a new printer soon and want the best performance I can get with my little system. I also will be buying an external hard drive in the distant future and want the same for it.

    Any advice will be welcome

    Thanks

    Mitch

No can do, but what you can do is fit a USB 2 PCI card into a spare slot in the motherboard - the card contains the USB2 controller which your motherboard lacks - say something like this .....

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=usb+pci+card

I forget the nominal differences between USB 1 & USB 2 transfer speeds, but I think it is of the order of 40x. Bear in mind though that only USB2 devices will attain USB 2 speeds - USB 1 devices, when plugged into a USB 2 port will only work at USB 1 speed.

A USB 2 external hard drive is pretty nifty when plugged into a USB 2 port, but is an absolute laggard when plugged into a USB 1 port.

Thanks Pete for the quick response. You saved me time taking the side of my box and poking around. Now I can just go buy what I need. Will I have to disable the onboard usb in cmos or can I just leave it as it is?

No - by fitting the card you gain the USB 2 ports in addition to the USB 1 ports already installed.

Hi Mitch, I've done this at least four times on Comps. You buy the PCI card with anything from 2 - 6 USB ports on the card. Some may even have a port internally with the rest accessible from the rear of the case. The card usually comes with a CD with a set of drivers and instructions to install. XP will usually be able to install without any problem. You may need to check in BIOS whether to enable USB 2.0. LOL Neil.:D

    Hello RetiredLearner,

Thanks for the encouragement. Still looking at which one to buy. They are so inexpensive....not sure what I would need an internal USB port for though....another hard drive maybe??????

    Have a happy.

    Will keep y'all posted

    Mitch
