Running Win 98 (first edition). All of a sudden, Outlook Express 6 has stopped working. It opens, but that's it. The cursor stays as an hourglass forever. Says at the bottom "Working Online." After a while, Ctrl-Alt-Del shows it's not responding so I have to close it. Internet access and everything else on the computer works fine, and I haven't installed or uninstalled anything recently. I am able to check my mail through Yahoo and I am receiving messages so I don't think it's an ISP problem. Any ideas? Is there a repair for OE6 or do I have to uninstall/reinstall it?

You repair OE by repairing IE. Control panel, add/remove programs, highlight IE, add/remove, then select repair.

Thanks, I figured that was probably the way to do it. Now, I presume this means I need to somehow back up my address book and saved messages first. Any tricks to that?

That info is stored in a different area and not affected by the repair.

Here's a good link for OE info.

Well, I've run IE repair, and registry restore, both to no effect.

Don't have a solution for you yet, just a comment though. I noticed you have two posts running about the same problem. They really frown on that here, and you will notice that you were given the same link on the other post that I gave. It doesnt help the people who are trying to help you not knowing that you have tried other solutions because you posted twice in different forums. Keep everything in one thread..

Instead of repair you may have to select add a componmet and the at the proper place RE-INSTALL everything.

Anything that shows up in the list in BOLD may not be needed but it a better Idea to select them anyway.

The problem you are having is just why I QUIT using OE a LONG time ago. The darn thing kept going bonkers on me.

An EXCELLENT replacement for OE is Eudora installed on a partiton other than C:.

Sorry for the cross-posting. I didn't notice until after my first post that there was a separate forum for OE.

After some forum surfing, I've learned there is a big problem with the latest upgrade of Zone Alarm (which I installed a few days ago). It's causing IE and sometimes OE to not be able to connect.

Did the solution at Zonelabs fix your problem? I had a similar issue with Internet Answering machine after upgrading the previous ZoneAlarm. I tried everything, finally removed Zonealarm and starting running Kerio from the advice at this board.

I discovered a little trick in uninstalling Zone Alarm...which seems to work "most of the time" and is a lot faster than their 25-step program involving file and registry key manual deletion.

Use ZA's uninstaller but choose "Custom Install" instead of "Automatic." Then select everything in each list it gives you and tell it to uninstall them all.

It probably should do all of that during an automatic uninstall but it appears that it doesn't. After using that method of Custom, I found only one or two registry keys left behind and only one file...in the Internet Log folder...while using the "Automatic" uninstall left quite a bit behind.

If you want to continue using ZA, go to Old Version and get version 2.6...and be sure to uncheck any boxes that refer to "automatically look for updates. "

Thanks for the tip. I've been wanting to try a different firewall for a while so I guess now's the time.
